Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 30.9.19.

Castlelyons Junior Hurlers beaten in Semi Final.

Youghal 0-24 Castlelyons 2-14

Our Junior B hurlers were defeated by Youghal in Killeagh at 8.15pm on Wednesday night in the semi-final of the East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship. Going into the game we were down Brian Carroll (played Intermediate), Robbie Feeney (on travels), Cian O Leary just back after holidays and Ian O Riordan just back after serious injury and Ronan Fenton (could not play due to injury). Despite down we were down lads and some others off training, we fought hard as Noel McAuliffe and Darren Tobin put us 2-1 early on. However, Youghal fought back well and it was 2-6 to 0-7 at half time.

Youghal had the breeze in the second half and put over 0-1 from the thrown after half time. Darren Tobin was accurate from frees and Ian Riordan go 0-1 for us. However, Youghal are a strong outfit as they brought on Brendan Ring at half time. He was one of one of their intermediate stars last year. He made a big contribution as he banged over a few points. However, Darren Tobin landed a free to send the game into extra time and the score on the long whistle was Castlelyons 2-11 Castlelyons 0-17. There was a welter of excitement and the first half of extra time was a few minutes short. Half time in extra time we were still in the game as Youghal were just 0-1 up. Ian Riordan had to go off as he had a repeat of an old injury and he was a big loss to us. Youghal had a strong bench and ran out winner by 0-4 in a cracking game. Fair play to the lads as J P Murphy did well in goal and all the backs including Liam Moroney, Conor McCarthy and Ciaran McGann fought hard all through and Redmond Walsh scored 0-1 from corner back. The team had a great run in this championship and the league.

It was interesting that Aghada, who Castlelyons had defeated in the round robin earlier, had a comprehensive over Youghal in the East Cork Final on Sunday. Overall the round robin, the brainchild of Mick O Brien our Divisional secretary, was a great set up in the championship so congrats to Aghada. Thanks to Ciaran McGann, Declan Wallace, managers of the team and Colm Barry, Colm Spillane and Tom Carroll who assisted with warmups and coaching, etc. There were a few young players, Conor McCarthy in the backs Shane Cotter at midfield, Shane Flynn and I O Riordan in the forwards introduced to adult hurling and it can only be good for the club. Will do all the players as they made a great effort and play out that last league game lads.

Team: J P Murphy, C McCarthy, L Moroney, R Walsh, C O Leary, C McGann, S Fenton, J O Leary, S Cotter, B O Donovan, S Flynn, N McAuliffe, D Tobin, C Cotter, Ian O Riordan Subs: - E O Neill , M Murphy, S Moroney, A O Neill, M Spillane, M J Dorgan, A O Neill R Fenton.

Minor Hurlers out in Rebel Óg County Division 2 Championship.

Castlelyons minor hurlers are out in the county on Sunday 6th October as they play Kilavullen at in Ballyhooly at 1pm. Best of luck to the management Willie Casey, Pat O Neill, Niall O Leary and Alan Fenton and all the players as they have prepared well for this game. Killavullen were defeated in the North Cork Final by Kilara Óg by the narrowest of margins in a cracking game on a score of 1-12 to 0-13. Kilara Óg are an amalgamation of Araglen and Kilworth who are loaded with strong hurlers so that makes Killavullen a good side too. Killavullen have top men in Mickey O Connor, Jamie Magnier top forwards as they put over 0-5 and 0-4 in their Divisional final. Ronal Barry at full back and Fionn Magnier at centre back are strong for them in the backs. But we have a lot of good lads too and this should be a great game if we play up to form. Ballyhooly is a short journey so be sure to come out and give sweet Castlelyons a shout. Come on mol and óige agus tiochfaidh said as the lads have given us all ready and they are our future.

New Management for Cork Under 20 Hurlers.

There will be a new management set up for the Cork Under 20 hurlers for the coming season led by the vastly experienced Pat Ryan of Sarsfields with Fergal Condon, Wayne Sherlock, Brendan Coleman and Donal O Mahony. Delighted for Fergal Condon has restored a pride in Imokilly hurling in recent seasons as they now head for three in a row in the senior championship. He has excellent management and coaching skills with an innate ability to fit into any group as he has a great way with players. So, no doubt he will be of mighty assistance to Pat Ryan and his men as they endeavour to mould a winning team for the Rebels. Best of luck lads.

Of course, the famous rebels of the last golden era for Cork on the hurling fields, even if there was a bit of excitement about their gear, are on board with both minor and senior management outfits. Donal Óg Cusack, Tom Kenny and Sean Óg O Halpín are with the

minors and Diarmuid O Sullivan is part of Kieran Kingston’s set up with the seniors. These lads have already cut their teeth in coaching teams and are a great choice. Time to get down to business now in a low-key manner as Cork need them.

Imokilly defeat Sarsfields in Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Final.

Imokilly will play St Finbarrs on Sunday 6.10.19 at 3.45pm in Páirc Uí Rinn in the Cork SHC semi-final. Fergal Condon and his management will have the work with to the lads. Our men Colm Barry and Anthony Spillane and Tom Carroll on the panel. St Finbarrs will be a tough team and as many were playing on the football versus Nemo Rangers recently but it may affect their hurling touch. The other other semi-final is on at 2pm when Glen Rover play Carrigtwohill which should be another great game. How our Castlelyons patrons will support Imokilly and our own Castlelyons lads.

Castlelyons GAA Draw will be heard on Friday 11th October.

Tickets are still on sale for this fundraising draw We have many teams involved in the business end of the championships and there is a serious outlay in repairs and pitch maintenance to cater for an array of teams both boys and girls. The draw comprises of five euro per tickets with first prize 500 euros, second 300 euros and third 200 euros so we are looking to all members of our committees and clubs giving a handout in sales. The general involvement in and social values of the local GAA Club are invaluable to the local community and we appreciate your support as always. The draw will be in the Pedlars on Friday 11th October 2019.
