Russell Rovers GAA Club

Last week we completed our JHL programme ahead of the deadline date of 30th September set by the East Cork Board.

On Wednesday night (25th) our Junior C team travelled to Riverstown to play Sarsfields in our last Division 3 game. A win here would have pushed us to the top of the league table but we came up against a strong Sars outfit on the night while Rovers were without a few key players who might have made it a much closer tie.

We started well enough and the sides were on level terms coming up to half-time but a goal and a point by Sars in the last 90 seconds of play put them into a 1-10 to 0-9 lead at the short whistle.

In the second half a cracking goal by Stephen Walsh closed the gap and gave us hope of a recovery but Sars superior fitness saw them pull away in the final quarter and run out deserving winners on a score of 1-22 to 1-13.

On the plus side for Rovers it was great to see Colin Maher and Colin Crowley return to action as we look forward to our last round-robin game against Carraig na bhFear in the Junior C championship in which we have already secured a semi-final place.

Team: Eoin Ivers; Seamus Kearney, Pa Crowley, Cormac Aherne; Shane Casey, Luke O’Riordan, Sean Devanney; Dan Ruddy, Eoin McGrath; Shane O’Neill, Colman Quinlan (Capt), Alan Cott; Sean Gilsenan, Colin Crowley, Stephen Walsh.

Subs: Colin Maher, Steve Cronin, Chris Scanlon, David Casey (all used).

The following night, Thursday 26th, our Junior A hurlers secured their place in the JHL Division 1 final when they had a comfortable win over Watergrasshill in Killeagh despite lining out without seven first choice players. Those who stepped into the breech acquitted themselves well even though five of them had also played just the previous night with the Junior C’s.

A well-taken goal by Colman Quinlan in the first half helped us to a 1-10 to 0-8 lead at the break and another by Luke Murray in the second half put daylight between the sides. Final score: Russell Rovers 2-16 Watergrasshill 0-11.

Team: Ross Walsh; Luke O’Riordan, Paul Lane, Eoghan O’Sullivan; Kevin Ivers, John Paul Ivers, Chris Ruddy; Luke Duggan-Murray, Kieran Walsh; Dan Moynihan (Capt), Dan Ruddy, Kiaran Aherne; Cormac Aherne, Colman Quinlan, Eoin McGrath.

Subs: James Ahern, Sean Gilsenan, Kevin Moynihan, Josh Beausang, James Kennefick, Kevin Tattan.

The draw for the quarter-final of the County JAHC took place in Pairc Uí Rinn last Saturday evening, presided over by County CEO Kevin O’Donovan.

Ballinascarthy received a bye into the semi-final where they will meet the winners of Carraig na bhFear and Courcey Rovers.

Russell Rovers were drawn against Kilbree with the winners meeting the winners of Newmarket and Brian Dillons in the other semi-final.

The three quarter-final ties are down to take place this coming Saturday, 5th October with Rovers fixed to play Kilbree in Ballygarvan at 3pm.

Readers will recall we overcame Kilbree by the narrowest of margins in the County semi-final in Pairc Uí Rinn last year – the same result will do nicely this time.

We wish the players and management the very best of luck next Saturday and would ask all of our loyal followers once again to come out and lend your support.
