East Cork Junior C Hurling Championship Group 2 Round 1

Killeagh 2-9 Midleton 2-8

After 24 hours of horrible rain over Thursday night into Friday, the weather cleared for this opening game in the round robin series and was very much a highly entertaining game at Páirc Uí Chinnéide. The usual mix of older lads getting togged out for the enjoyment and fitness side of it and the younger lads from 18 year old upwards who are stuck in between seasons of Minor championship & U21 championship. Killeagh got off to a lively start with scores from Johnny Walsh & Dylan Coleman saw Killeagh go two points to one up after five minutes. But there was some great scoring in the opening thirty minutes, Shane Kearney scoring 1-2 from long range frees, scores from Coleman, Tom Fitzgerald & Eamonn Byrne leaving the half time score Killeagh 1-7 Midleton 0-3.

The visitors got the better start in the second half getting a goal early in the second half. Killeagh found it tough to scores playing against a slight breeze into the scoreboard end on the lights pitch. But Shane Kearney with two long range scores had Killeagh in front by a point going into the closing minutes 1-9 to 1-7. Midleton scored a point from a tight angle out in the right corner before a long ball in from the Magpie defence was pulled on by the full forward and buried into the back of the net. The visitors had the lead going into injury time by two points before a goal line scramble as Shane Kearney bury the sliotar into the back of the Midleton net. Referee Andrew Dorgan blew the full time whistle and scoreline read Killeagh 2-9 Midleton 2-8.

Two more games in this division against Russell Rovers & Carraig na bhFear to come.

Killeagh Team: Aaron Walsh; Barry Motherway, Kevin O’Connor, Cian McDonald; Shane Kearney, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Dominic Byrne; Dylan Coleman, Jerry Dullea; Tom Fitzgerald, Johnny Walsh, Eamonn Byrne; Tom Sheehan, Martin Fitzgerald, Olin Hennessy.

Rebel Óg East U16 Hurling Championship Division 1 Semi Final

St. Catherines 1-12 Killeagh/Itas 3-9

Despite the valiant efforts of our young Gaels we lost to a very strong St Catherine’s side in Ballynoe on Wednesday last.

Our lads got off to a lively start with two points from Paudie Mackey, one from a free and one from play in the opening five minutes before St. Catherine’s opened their account with a point from a free. It was tight throughout the first half and a goal late in the first half saw Catherine’s lead at the interval by two points, 1-04 to 0-5.

Killeagh/Itas started strong in the second half with a point from Evan Lane, followed by two well taken frees by Paudie Mackey but an opportunist goal by Catherine’s saw them stay ahead.

The closing quarter saw both teams fight for glory, however a third goal for St Catherine’s made it an uphill battle for our lads. They fought valiantly with points from Daniel Walsh and a well taken goal from Jamie Fogarty. Only an excellent save from the Catherine’s goalie in the dying seconds prevented a replay. The final score was St Catherine’s 3-9 Killeagh/Itas 1-12.

Killeagh/Itas team; P. Geary; C. Landers, C. Meade, B. Fogarty; R. Lynch, J. Fogarty, B. Budds; E. Brenner G. Walsh; A. Fitzgibbon, C. Treacy, E. Lane; D. Buckley, P. Mackey, D. McCarthy.

Subs: D. McMahon, D. Walsh.

Rebel Óg Central Minor Premier 2 Hurling League

Cobh 0-11 Killeagh/Itas 3-13

On a very difficult night of hurling for both sides (and the few spectators who turned out) with the strong breeze off the south coast and the rain teeming down throughout the game, our minor hurlers backed up their championship win against Cobh a few weeks ago with an 11 point win over the same side in the league last Wednesday evening. Killeagh off to a decent start scoring 1-2 in the opening ten minutes. The goal coming from some hard work from Cian McDonald bursting into the Cobh square, ball squirted loose across the goal and Ciaran O’Rourke finished it off. Cobh worked hard in the second quarter and scored some great points with the strong breeze and drew the game level late on in the half. At Niall O’Neill’s short whistle Cobh 0-7, Killeagh/Itas 1-4.

In the second half, our minor hurlers turned up the tempo a notch driving into the game. O’Rourke scoring a pair of points from placed ball before scoring his second 3 pointer of the game 40 minutes in. Ryan McCarthy got his name on the scoresheet from a long range score but Ciaran closed the game out late on when scoring the hat trick goal with seven minutes left on the clock. A strong performance from the lads last Wednesday but they will need to bring that to the table this Wednesday when they face Bride Rovers in the quarter final of the Premier 2 Hurling Championship. The game is in Dungourney at 7pm. Please show your support to both players and management.

Team; B Murphy; J Fogarty, D Lucey, O Cosgrave; R Treacy, R McCarthy, C Coughlan; C Fitzgibbon, O Broderick; G Walsh Wallace, R Sinclair, D Collins; D O’Connor, C O’Rourke, C McDonald. Subs Used; R Bernard, P Mackey, E Lane.

They say the football is in crisis in Cork, but it is a second Cork side who have reached another All Ireland Football final. This time we speak of the Cork Minors who were so impressive against Mayo last Saturday afternoon. Some great attacking play, open football and exhibition of scoring as well saw Bobby

O’Dwyer and the team advance to the All Ireland minor final on September 1st after the 4-12 to 1-13 win over Mayo. They play Galway in the final.

We also have the Under 20 Hurlers in the All Ireland Final when they play Tipperary on Saturday 24th August at 6pm in LIT Gaelic Grounds. Best of luck to both sides in the respective finals from all at Killeagh GAA.

Thanks to anyone who gave a helping hand last Saturday for the East Cork Oil Junior A Championship game between Russell Rovers & Lisgoold. A huge crowd turned out so it was very busy at times but as they say ‘Many Hands make Light Work’! Please do not be shy if asked for the next game for a hand, we all can get through it together!

We are currently testing out a new phone application called “Whats The Scor”. It is currently the only Live GAA scoring app in the market and Killeagh GAA club have been asked to test it out. We are running tests currently with the notes & notifications segments on it as well as the Live Scoring feature. We are hoping at end of summer to have this rolled out across the Adult club and by start of year 2020, that the whole club will have the facility. It will be used this week at various championship & league games for the club.

There are some advertising slots for local businesses to be filled on the new app. It is free to all club members. More information on this & much more can be found through the PRO or you can download the app right now, find Killeagh GAA Club and follow the action by ‘Like’ by the heart button on the bottom right of the page.
