Cork County Intermediate Hurling Championship
Dungourney 1-15 Kilbrittain 0-14
Dungourney progressed to the third round of the championship with a hard earned win over Kilbrittain in Passage West last Sunday.
Kilbrittain started the better on a great afternoon for hurling ,mercifully the heavy rain that we had for the previous days was absent, and they raced in to a three points to no score lead. Dungourney settled though and slowly but surely got to grips with their opponents a couple of Long range frees from Bill Ahern gave us a lift and after ten minutes we took the lead four points to three.
It was nip and tuck for a while but Dungourney opened a three point lead coming up to half time and looked to be putting a hold on the game,Kilbrittain came back though and moved to within a point of us before we got the last two points to lead at the short whistle ten points to eight. An impressive enough half then where we had some great scores but were punished for a few unnecessary fouls .......there was a fair hill on that pitch and we were against it in the second half it was going to take a big second half performance to win this one.
The second half started with Kilbrittain again starting better and after four minutes they were level ten points each, our lads rallied again and had the next three points .
Again Kilbrittain weren’t going away and they responded with the next two white flags the game turned though after eighteen minutes when Ryan Denny was fouled in the penalty area and he dispatched the resultant penalty to the net .
Kilbrittain tried their best to come back but the Dungourney team held firm and though Kilbrittain added a further two points our lads matched them and were delighted to take the win on a score line of Dungourney 1-15 to Kilbrittain 0-14.
A good result then and the management team will surely be happy to come out of the game with a victory and no injuries as we have had a lot of them this summer. We have Cloughduv next up provisionally fixed for the 24th of August ,it’s all going to come hard and fast now after a summer of inactivity but we will savour this one first ,well done to all involved.
