KILLEAGH FALL SHORT AGAINST THE CHAMPIONS ROVERS

EAST CORK JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Russell Rovers 2-18, Killeagh 3-10

A battling performance by our second team against the 2018 county finalists saw us defeated by five points in an entertaining and quality game in perfect conditions in Castlemartyr on a midsummers’ evening. Rovers got going first with two points before Keane Budds (who had an excellent first half with three points from play) got us off the mark in the third minute. A second point from Keane and debutant Dara Motherway’s opening score left it 0-06 to 0-03 on the quarter hour. A good puck out from Shane Scully then found Jamie Landers whose long delivery was flicked on by Dan Landers. Dara Motherway ran on the breaking ball and with a bit of work to do placed his shot perfectly beyond Ross Walsh in the Rovers goal, levelling the game. Keane’s third point put us ahead by one – 1-04 to 0-06 but Rovers replied immediately to level. It was nip and tuck until just before half time when Rovers added 1-03 without reply in the final minutes (with Kevin Moynihan very effective at full-forward) to go in leading by 1-12 to 1-05, probably a harsh scoreline on our efforts in the opening half.

We began brightly in the second half with Dara adding three further points in the opening ten minutes, and when Padraic Carroll, who also played excellently throughout, goaled on the 42nd minute, it was game on – 1-14 to 2-08. Patrick O’Brien, Jamie Landers and Luke Fogarty, among others, were very involved, and a shock looked possible. Within minutes, however, former Cork player Bud Hartnett showed his finishing ability with a brilliant goal from a tight angle. Rovers added a further point from Josh Beausang, and from here to the finish both sides were limited to scores from placed balls, with Dan adding 1-02 and Rovers three points from frees. So, we enter the second round draw with some hope after signs of promise in defeat. Well done to the panel and management, in particular to our captain Ger Collins who played the full hour on the eve of his wedding. Now that’s dedication to the cause!

Team: Shane Scully, Tadhg Crotty, Aidan Morrison, Tadhg O’Connor, Jamie Landers, Patrick O’Brien, Brendan Keniry, Kevin Fennelly, Ger Collins, Keane Kelly Budds (0-3), Padraic Carroll (1-0), Luke Fogarty, Richie Long, Dan Landers (1-03f), Dara Motherway (1-04). Subs used: David Ogbebor, Eric Murphy.

REBEL ÓG PREMIER 2 MINOR HURLING LEAGUE

Killeagh/Ita’s 6-15 Kiltha Óg 0-15

Our minor hurlers overturned two recent defeats by Kiltha Óg to take the league points in this Premier 2 hurling league game last Wednesday against a depleted opposition. Paul Delaney got our first goal in the opening minute after good support play by Daniel Doherty, while David Collins, Rob Sinclair, Robbie Treacy and Christian Coughlan all contributed much throughout the game, and Brian Murphy was 100% assured in goals. Ryan McCarthy’s long shot deceived the Kiltha keeper just before half time and that left

us 2-08 to 0-06 ahead at that stage. At the three quarter mark it was 2-12 to 0-10 before a flurry of late goals (two from Ryan) and Ciaran O’Rourke, gave us a comprehensive victory.

Team: Brian Murphy, Darragh O’Connor, Dan Lucey, Owen Cosgrove, Christian Coughlan, Dara Motherway, Robbie Treacy, Ryan McCarthy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ciaran Leahy, Ciaran O’Rourke, David Collins, Paul Delaney, Rob Sinclair, Daniel Doherty. Subs used: Olan Broderick, Padraig Landers.

UNDER 14 FÉILE FOOTBALLERS HEADING TO CONNACHT

After a successful Féile na nGael campaign in early June, our Under 14 Killeagh/Itas panel are heading for Connacht next weekend looking to land a prestigious double! We head for Shurle in County Mayo on Friday afternoon where three games take place between then and Saturday with everyone reaching a quarter final (whether it be Cup or Shield). Best of luck to Seamus Considine and his charges. History has already been made by qualifying for the tournament already, let’s go that one step further and get a win under our belts. If possible, please go and support the lads on this away trip on what could be a historic weekend for the club!!

UNDER 13’S

On Wednesday, we travelled to Cobh for a football league game. The lads had a flying start securing goals from early on.

Great team work and passing across the field saw us with a steady lead at half time. Killeagh/Itas remained dominant in the second half with some fine scoring and a very impressive finishing score of Killeagh/Itas 15-12 Cobh 6-5

On Saturday the lads travelled to Midleton to participate in the inaugural Bill O’Keeffe Under 13 Hurling tournament. Our first game was against Lismore, and the lads were on track from early on with some fine scoring. Great team work across the pitch saw us defeat Lismore with another impressive finishing score. Killeagh/Itas 9-11 Lismore 1-3

This win put us into the Cup final against a Premier One Midleton side in what can only be described as a cracking game of hurling. Killeagh/Itas were on fire from early on, securing fine scores and giving us a 5 point lead at half time. Midleton came out fighting in the second half and evened the score early on. Though the lads were unlucky in the second half they fought hard throughout and narrowly missed out on the title, losing to Midleton by only one point. It finished Midleton 5-10 Killeagh/Itas 6-6.

KILLEAGH GAA CLUB THANKS ALL WHO VOLUNTEERED FOR IRONMAN IRELAND 2019

One of the biggest events of the year has seemed to have been run off without a hitch and a huge thanks and gratitude goes to John Innes, Ricky Devereaux and their team of volunteers for putting on such a superb event. It was a day that will long in the memory, some of it for the carnage of bikes and exhausted bodies everywhere, but also for the great joy witnessed at the finish line and the massive collective effort throughout East Cork in the mobilisation of hundreds of volunteers and supporters.

From the club’s perspective, thanks to all who helped the club in organising stewards for the various cross roads along the bike route from north of Dungourney all the way to the outskirts of Youghal town. Congratulations to all the Ironman athletes who took part in the event and we look forward in seeing you all in 2020. You are all Ironmen!

We are hoping at end of summer to have this rolled out across the Adult club and by start of year 2020, that the whole club will have the facility. There are some advertising slots to be filled on the application. More information on this & much more can be found through the PRO or you can download the app right now, find Killeagh GAA Club and follow the action by ‘Like’ by the heart button on the bottom right of the page.
