JUNIOR HURLERS ARE ON A ROLL!!

East Cork Division 1 Hurling League Killeagh 4-20, Fr. O’Neill’s 0-12

Two wins on the bounce now for our Division 1 hurling team, who followed their victory over Sarsfields with a comprehensive victory over Fr. O’Neill’s on Saturday evening last in Killeagh. With ten different scorers on the night, all from play bar one point, and every line dominant, there are many reasons to be positive after this game. David Ogbebor, Dan Landers and Eric Murphy (who finished with 1-02 for the second game in a row) raised first half green flags, while Dan added another in the closing stages. Good preparation for a testing championship encounter against champions Russell Rovers around midsummer’s day.

Team: Shane Scully; Tadhg O’Connor, Aidan Morrison, Tadhg Crotty; Richie Landers, Christy Coughlan, Jamie Landers; Keane Budds, Kevin Fennelly; Ger Collins, Pa O’Brien, Luke Fogarty; Eric Murphy, Dan Landers, David Ogbebor. Subs: Dara Motherway, Cathal Fitzgibbon.

BIG WEEKEND AHEAD WITH THE BIG BALL

Our Junior Footballers will turn out this weekend for their championship opener against Cobh. The game takes place this Saturday afternoon, May 11th at 4pm in Ballinacurra. We wish Johnno O’Connor and his charges the best of luck in this very important game and hopefully you will turn out in big numbers in support for them!

U13 HURLERS BEATEN IN A 21 GOAL THRILLER

Fé13 Hurling League: Youghal 11-6 Killeagh/Itas 10-3

On Wednesday May 1st the U13s took on Youghal in Magners Hill for what was going to be an exciting game. The home side were first to score followed quickly by a Killeagh/Itas goal.

Great Hurling and team work across the pitch saw many goals buried in the net, with the half time score Youghal 7-3, Killeagh/Itas 6-2.

The second half continued to be a challenge for the lads and there were a few injuries picked up. However, they battled hard, continuing to bury goals in the net but it wasn’t our night.

THE BIG HELLO A BIG SUCCESS WITH EVERYONE IN COMMUNITY

On Bank Holiday Monday May 6th, the sun shone, the crowds came (eventually!) and there was entertainment, sport, food and fun for all ages in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Well done to the large team of

volunteers who helped to make our annual “Lá na gClub” the best yet. Under the banner of “The Big Hello” (many thanks to Cork County Council for their sponsorship of the event), our Community and Family Fun Day was a great success. The range of healthy food options, the walking, yoga and mindfulness sessions, and the music, singing and dancing led by Mary, Geraldine and Tom were all a big hit with the adults, while the younger folk had a great range of activities to get involved in – Poc Fada, Crossbar Challenge, Penalty Shoot Out, Rounders / Fun and Run, Obstacle Courses and the highlight of the day – “Killeagh’s Fittest Family With A Twist”. One twist – the ‘families’ were a bit short in getting the over 18s involved – they were too tired by that stage of the evening! All in all, a fitting finale for a great May Sunday Festival, from Friday through to Monday. Well done to everyone for making it a huge success! Not bad for a small village & community! Here is to May Sunday Festival 2020!

KILLEAGH GAA FENCE PROJECT

Our transformation of the main field got underway last Friday week as the first pieces of the jigsaw got taken away. A team led by Pádraig McGrath got the wire mesh (which was protecting the field) down in a five hour period. Works recommenced last week as our club sponsor, Donal O’Brien, Building Contractor moved in the remove the remaining concrete poles that have been standing in Páirc Uí Chinnéide for nearly 40 years.

75% of that removal work is complete. This week, we shall see the holes being dug out to pour the concrete to get our new fence in place.

Please bear in mind, if you have the main pitch booked, it will not be available for use until the essential work is complete. Also, parents are advised and asked to please supervise their children while on the grounds of Páirc Uí Chinnéide over the next few weeks to keep them away from construction materials, equipment & working areas. Please be patient, it will be all worthwhile in time!

A massive ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has contributed thus far to this much needed facility improvement. You can still pledge your support via our ‘Sponsor A Section’ fundraiser at any time by contacting Pádraig (087 857 5678) or any committee member.

CLUB SHOP OPEN EVERY SATURDAY

Our Club Shop will be open every Saturday from 10:30am until 11:30am. We have re-stocked our shop with new training tops and shorts. GAA GOLF SOCIETY:

The Killeagh GAA Golf society have been quite busy over the last few weeks & long may it continue while the weather is quite decent.

Although, in saying that last Tuesday was a washout for our golfers down at New Ross Golf Club as it didn’t stop raining all day long! Well done to the hardy souls who braved the elements for an enjoyable day of sport! The results from last Tuesday are as follows;

1st Liam Hyde

Runner Up & Best Gross Tim Murphy

3rd Ray Rochford

4th Dick Hennessy

5th Shay Rochford

The next Tuesday outing takes place on Tuesday May 28th at Fermoy Golf Club.

Our 23rd Annual Golf Classic is on its way and Killeagh GAA would like to place on record, our sincere thanks & gratitude to our main three sponsors for the 23rd Golf Classic. They are Dominic Fogarty of Fogarty Bros. Car Sales Killeagh, JJ Fennelly of Premier Service Station Midleton & James Rochford of Abbeylands Nursing Home, Kildorrery.

We currently have spaces to be filled for sponsorship for Tee-Boxes (€70) & Classic sponsorship (€140) over the coming weeks. Or if you want to book your date & time now, call Ray with your details. With help from everyone, we can make this 23rd Golf Classic a huge success over the three days.

For more information or to place sponsorship at this hugely popular event, please call Ray immediately on 087-2330054.

Also, regarding the Golf Classic, a lot of promotion takes places each year & one of our biggest ways in letting visitors know is via our signs which we build and make each year. When the Classic was launched nearly a fortnight ago, there was a sign tied down inside the main gate of Páirc Uí Chinnéide. The same sign has been missing since ‘Storm Hannah’ landed on Friday 25th of April. There was a search party sent out over the last 10 days looking for the sign to ‘phone home’ and to be reinstated. It has not been found since. If you have seen it or know where it is, please (with full confidentiality) contact any member of the committee or Ray on 087-2330054.

The 3rd round of the ‘Golfer of the Year’ competition takes place at Cobh Golf Club on Thursday 23rd of May. The Overall leaderboard after 2 of the 8 tournaments played is tight at the top. It reads as the 1st round winner, Tadgh O’Connor leading the way with 29 points, one point clear of the 2nd round winner Stephen Murphy on 28 with Cathal Deane four points adrift on 24 points. Get in contact with Ray on 087-2330054 with more details on this or to play in round 3.

Also, the draw for the 1st round of the Matchplay tournament was made, of which there were 32 entries received & sees;

Eddie Hayes v Sean Power

Cathal Deane v Liam Kelly

Sean Treacy v William Murphy

Tim Crotty v Alan Crotty

Patricia Treacy v Liz Walsh

Ann Rochford v Joe Higgins

Michael Lynch v John Keniry

Colin Fogarty v Pat O’Keeffe

Kevin Conlon v Michael Collins

Trish Landers v Eamon Hickey

John Walsh v Ray Rochford

Stephen Byrne v Adrian Budds

Tom Fitzgerald v Tadgh O’Connor

Conor Cronin v Stephen Murphy

These games must be played by close of business (or before light fades) on Wednesday 22nd of May.

Don’t forget, if you are interested in joining the Golf Society for their variety of trips away throughout the year for 2019, or if you want to sponsor an outing or be a sponsor (big or small) at our Golf Classic in July give Ray Rochford a call on 087-2330054. (More details on Poster below)

RIVALRIES RENEWED:

Congratulations are in order to our colleagues at Youghal GAA club because last Sunday evening, they hosted the legendary teams of Cork & Waterford from the 00’s decade in a charity match in aid of Cuan House, Youghal Cancer Support House. The crowds turned out in their drives for the big game which in turn raised over €30,000 for Cuan House!

It was great to see the four Killeagh GAA club members among the players involved on Sunday. Joe Deane, Mark Landers & Bernard Rochford all togged out with the Rebels while Waterford man Johnny Brenner was wearing the blue & white of the Deisé.

Although both sides were carrying some condition, the game was played at a frantic pace over the 60 minutes with some superb scores taken from both sides, but it was the better shooting from the Rebels saw them come out on top on a scoreline 6-19 to 6-7. Once again, hats off to everyone who got involved in raising the 30k for this worthy cause!

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE NOTES

by Tricia Treacy

SENIOR TEAM; Our senior team played Ballincollig in their final game of the league. In a sundrenched Pairc Ui Chinneide on Wednesday evening last Killeagh lined out a strong team. They were in control of the game throughout and were well ahead at half time. Ballincollig upped their game in the second half but couldn’t match Killeagh’s strength and enthusiasm on the night. Killeagh ran out easy winners 4.14 to 0.03

U 14s; Our Under 14s continued their year with a practice game in Castlelyons on Thursday evening. This was a well worth while game with the girls playing really well.

CONDOLENCES; We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Eddie Hayes on the very sad death of his beloved wife Breda. Ar dheis de ar a anam

CONGRATULATIONS; Congrats to Hannah Looney who was a member of the victorious Cork Senior Football team who won the league title on Sunday last.
