Cork County Intermediate hurling championship
Eire 1-22 Dungourney  2-18
A point in the 66th minute from Eire Og proved to be a heartbreaker for all of the Dungourney contingent in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last as it condemned us to defeat in the most cruel way.......beaten by a single point.
It all started well for us with Shane Hegarty opening the scoring with a point soon after the start but Eire Og took a hold on the game with a goal soon after and then adding on points to give them breathing space. Eire Og’s forwards were elusive at this stage swapping positions to try to confuse our backs and were scoring more easily, after a quarter of an hour though we started to eat into their lead and a great goal by Sean Hegarty and points from Dylan Healy ,Sean again Cormac Griffin and Ryan Denny brought us back in to contention.
Eire Og rallied again though and unanswered points gave them a three point lead at half time.
I think most of the Dungourney faithful would have been content at halftime as we had played against a strong wind in the first half and were well in contention.
The second half started with another Eire Og point to put them four clear ,the teams exchanged points after that but Eire Og were to find scores easier to come by ,despite this Ryan Denny was unerring with frees and we remained competitive.
Fifteen minutes to go then and Cormac Griffin broke free to dispatch the sliotar to the net and there was only two between us again,a great Eoghan Ahern point and one from substitute James McCarthy were eye catching now as the match was level with time running out
Three and a half minutes of injury time were played when we again hit the front and everyone was looking to the referee to sound the whistle but unbelievably he played six minutes of injury time and Eire Og were able to wriggle out of the stranglehold and win the match, despair all round for the Dungourney  team and their supporters.
Eire Og then will progress to round three while we will have to traverse the minefield of round two ,on reflection though while defeat was our lot we have a lot of positives to take from this match and while we played well there is room for improvement. The management have a sound platform going forward and I can still see us having a say in the business end of the championship.
