MINORS BACK ON WINNING TRAIL TO DEFEAT O’NEILLS

Killeagh/Itas 5-10 Fr O’Neills 3-7

It was very much a game of two halves once again on Monday night in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Both sides with partcicurly strong forward lines. Some superb taken goals from Killeagh/Itas Ciaran O’Rourke (x2) and two brilliant penalty saves from keeper Brian Murphy saw the home side keep the visitors at bay. Their next football game is on 1st May, because they pick up the hurleys for next few weeks, home game vs Nemo Rangers on Wednesday.

FÉILE NA nÓG - U14 FOOTBALL

Where should we start? I think a big "well done" to a panel of young men for their amazing efforts in the group stages of the U14 Féile football in Kilworth on Saturday last. They fought hard, chased, blocked, took hits, gave hits and played with a ‘never say die’ attitude. They played excellent football which led to some fantastic scores. The first opponents in the group were our near neighbours Kiltha Óg, and we won this game 4-06 to 0-02. Killavullen were next, where we won again 7-06 to 0-01. The third team were Mitchelstown who were much tougher opponents but in the end the lads held out for a win, 4-02 to 1-06. The last team were Kilara Óg, the locals, who also had three wins going into the game. This was the crunch game - winner takes all! The day had picked up weather wise from being a damp windy day to being warm and sunny. The lads were tired and their legs were getting heavy and we picked up a few injuries along the way. Kilara were a tough team, being fast, big and skillful. We got off to a great start with a goal and a point but Kilara kept popping over points and bearing down on our goal. It was a tough game but all our boys dug deep winning by 2-07 to 0-09. On the final whistle the boys dropped to their knees with exhaustion from the efforts they had put in all day.

They now march on to the semifinal on Monday April 22nd, time & venue TBC. To name a standout player would be wrong because this was a whole hearted team effort from start to finish. The boys ran themselves to the ground and it was a courageous display of football. For themselves, their parents, coaches and club it was a very proud day. As usual thanks to all the parents for their support and to Seamus Considine, Conor Murphy and Deckie Long for their support and wisdom! As the saying goes winning isn't everything but the will to win is and by God this group of boys had the will to win on Saturday last. Well done to all of them. Keep up the good work boys and well done again. Ye were brilliant!!

The panel was Diarmuid Buckley, Liam Considine, Pierce Geary, Daniel Griffin, Jason Harte, Eoin Kelly, Colm Leahy, Darragh O'Brien, Jack O'Connor, Séan O'Riordan, Martin Power, Ruairi Mackey, Conor Burns, Harry Connon, Colm Cowhig, Séan Lynch, Séan Meade, Fionn Murphy, Michael O'Doherty, Barry Walsh and Ben Walsh.

RUSSELL HAS THE EYE OF THE TIGER AFTER NATIONAL HISTORY

Undoubtedly, the sporting story of the weekend is the back to back success of defending champion Tiger Roll & Youghal man Davy Russell who for the first time since Red Rum in 1974, defended his Grand National crown at sun scorched Aintree on Saturday afternoon. What a superb horse Tiger Roll is too, a legend in his own right. Sincerest congratulations from all at Killeagh GAA to Davy on this wonderful achievement. Due credit to Davy also for mentioning Kieran O’Connor who as is a big fan of the Champion Jockey, just shows the GAA family is a strong community across the Sports scene. It just does really show how vast sporting talent the Cork Sporting area is.

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE NOTES

Senior League Game vs Ballygarvan

On Wednesday last, April 3rd, our Senior Team lined out on Pairc Ui Chinneide to play their first league game of the season against a tough Ballygarvan side.

In challenging conditions, on what was a dull, very cold evening with a fierce wind blowing down the field, Killeagh and Ballygarvan battled it out to try and claim their first victory of the league. Killeagh possessed the advantage of a very strong wind in the first half, however, a determined Ballygarvan side never let Killeagh’s lead too far out of their sight. The game was led on the scoreboard by Killeagh for the duration of the first half, however there was little between the sides, with even play and each team contributing consistently to the scoreboard. Both teams were forced to be physical, tough and strong in the conditions and the game wasn’t exactly stylish to observe.

Killeagh went in on top at half time, yet they knew would have to dig deep in the second half if they wanted to sustain this lead, as they now faced to play against the strong wind. However, dig deep they did, and they refused to let Ballygarvan get on top. Our players put in a savage effort for the thirty minutes in what was a tough test for the defenders as the opposition continued to attack. Killeagh forwards put points on the board at the crucial moments and the team kept their composure throughout as they defended their lead to the end. A deserving win for our senior squad who were delighted to get over the line in what was a very competitive, very challenging, physical game of Camogie.

They look forward to their second league game which will be away game vs Eire Og next Wednesday April 10th.

MINOR LEAGUE GAME

On Tuesday 2nd April our Minors made the long journey to play Enniskeane in their next round of the league. The elements were testing with extremely cold and extremely windy conditions. Playing against the conditions in the first half our team found it hard to settle into the game and found they trailed very early in the game. They reversed the trend and played really well in the second half but the mountain was too hard to climb and Enniskeane ran out winners. Our squad put in a Trojan effort and while missing a few key players the girls stuck to their task and put in an hour of tough and physical Camogie.

Team: Ava Cunningham, Anna Sheehan, Rebecca Manning, Niamh O’Connor, Chloe Walsh, Saoirse Burns, Sarah Kent, Elena Kelleher, Aine O’Driscoll, Amy McCarthy, Ciara Hegarty, Orla Cowhig, Suzanne Dignam, Andrea Walsh, Caoimhe Murray, Lorna McCarthy.

UNDER 12s

Two U 12 teams headed to Watergrasshill to play another blitz on Saturday last 6th April. The girls were excellent up against three very physical, tough teams. They played Midleton, Erin’s Own and Watergrasshill. The involvement of two teams meant each girl got enormous game time They all put in a huge effort and really enjoyed the afternoon returning home exhausted!! Thanks to Len and all who gave him a hand in looking after the teams.

They go again next Sunday14th in Midleton. The Blitz begins at 1.30 and the opposition will be Midleton, Carragline and Dungourney

SPONSORED WALK
