SENIOR HURLERS SUMMERTIME BEGINS WITH A SHARE OF THE SPOILS

Killeagh 4-13 Ballymartle 0-25

A beautiful first day of ‘new time’ brought an early crowd to Pairc Ui Chinnéide on Sunday last for our fifth game in this year’s Division 1 League, with Ballymartle our opponents. The visitors were in fine form in the opening quarter, with six points from play inside ten minutes, while we struggled to keep in touch with Ryan McCarthy, Philip O’Neill and Daniel Walsh all on the mark. Our opening goal on 13 minutes came from great work by Ryan and Andrew Leahy, with Gary Leahy breaking the cover and finishing confidently to the net. Ballymartle took control again in the middle third and led by five – 0-14 to 1-06 – before Andrew Leahy got our second goal just before half-time. On 37 minutes, it was 0-17 to 2-06 and looked ominous, but some astute changes – Eoghan Keniry moving into the forward line and Kieran Lane working really hard in midfield – along with improved defending, saw us reduce the deficit to two by 50 minutes – 0-19 to 2-11, while Eoghan Keniry’s goal on 55 minutes put us ahead for the first time – 3-13 to 0-21. Ballymartle scored three in a row to go back in front by two before Gary, after great work by Killian Treacy and Shane Smiddy – both excellent in the second half – scored his second goal with time almost up. Ballymartle equalised from a free and in the dying seconds both sides had chances to win it, but a draw was the outcome, and a fair result for both teams. Next up we play St. Finbarr’s on Saturday 13th April in Riverstown at 7:30pm, with championship v Na Piarsaigh on Easter Sunday April 21st.

Team: Darren Cusack, Allen Keniry, Christy Coughlan, Sean Long, Kevin Murphy, Cian Fogarty, Killian Treacy, Eoghan Keniry, Matthew Murphy, Philip O’Neill, Daniel Walsh, Ryan McCarthy, Gary Leahy, Andrew Leahy, Shane Smiddy. Subs used: Kieran Lane, Keane Kelly Budds.

ROVERS STOPPED ON THE TRACKS BY A STRONG CASTLEMARTYR SIDE

East Cork U21 B Football Championship Semi-Final

Castlemartyr 6-11 Glenbower Rovers 2-05

Our Under 21 footballers ended their campaign for 2019 with a defeat to an excellent Castlemartyr side in Shanagarry on Saturday last. Our opponents were full value for their win, making the most of scoring opportunities that came their way, while our team was sluggish in defence and wasteful in attack. The damage was done in the first half, by which time the Reds led by 4-08 to 1-03. A good third quarter saw us score 1-02 with Kevin Murphy’s second goal giving us some hope, but Castlemartyr finished strongly with their fifth and sixth goals in the final ten minutes to seal victory and set up a final against Fr. O’Neill’s next weekend. Well done to all involved and to Manager John O’Connor.

Team: Ciaran O’Rourke, Fionn McDonnell, Christy Coughlan, Adrian Galvin, Keane Kelly Budds, Jamie Landers, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Barry Motherway, Cathal Deane, Sean Walsh, Killian Treacy, Kevin Murphy, Dan Hickey, David Ogbebor, Paul Delaney.

MINORS FALL TO DEFEAT AGAINST KILTHA IN A FOOTBALLING THRILLER

Killeagh/Itas 4-8 Kiltha Óg 5-10

It was very much a game of two halves on Monday night for a good game of football from both sides. The visitors holding power in the opening half with a strong forward line to contend with. Kiltha were well on top. The second half turned around very quickly and Killeagh/Itas started gathering momentum with good goals from Paudie Mackey & Ciaran O’Rourke (x2) saw the margin close very quickly but unfortunately time ran out and saw the Castlemartyr/Dungourney amalgamation claim the league points.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALLERS WENT ON RAMPAGE AGAINST FERMOY

Killeagh/Itas 8-16 Fermoy 2-4

Some wonderful footballs, great plays and sublime scores were the order of the day on Saturday afternoon as the hosts delivered a scoring performance to remember against Fermoy. From first whistle to last, the 16 players who played on the day put in a big shift to keep scoreboard ticking over and could have been a lot more only for the Fermoy ‘keeper making some superb saves. Onwards and upwards for this side.

U13 HURLING

Killeagh/Itas 4-4 Kiltha Óg 6-7

On Sunday the U13s took on Kiltha Og in the hurling league in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. The home side got off to a flying start, having 3 goals 2 points before the visitors first score.

Great Hurling and team work across the pitch had us on top at half time.

However, the second half saw greater strength from Kiltha and as they continued to score the home side struggled and were unlucky in many cases.

SPORTING BRAINS FROM AGHADA TAKE OUT THE KILLEAGH SPORTS QUIZ

A huge thanks to Niall Crowley who ran the quiz and done out the 80 questions on the night with some tricky questions along the way, but a superb night was had by all. It was fitting that the only Aghada team on the night won the quiz with a 75% strike rate. The team comprised of Pearse O’Neill and his brother John, Matt O’Connor & Kieran O’Connor brother Pa. €2,340 was raised on the night for the fundraiser. Thanks to all who contributed on the night.

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE NOTES by Tricia Treacy

On a very bright, sunny Saturday afternoon last, the inaugural ‘Sheila Spillane Perpetual Cup’ Senior Camogie tournament, hosted by Killeagh, took place on the two main fields of Pairc Ui Chinneide. What a wonderfully enjoyable day this turned out to be for the senior panels, mentors and supporters of Killeagh, Sarsfields, Cloughduv, St. Catherines and Courcey Rovers.

The tournament consisted of each team playing four 12 minute-a-side games in which each team played each other once. The standard of Camogie that was showcased, across the board from the teams participating in what developed into intense, competitive games, was a credit to all the clubs involved and to Cork Camogie. Games came down to the wire, many finishing with just one point separating the teams, suggesting though early in the year, that we may be in for another year of very tight league and championship games.

Both Killeagh and Sars succeeded in winning their first three games, leaving them to battle it out against each other in the final attempting to be the first team to claim the Sheila Spillane Perpetual Cup. The final was played with 15 minutes a side. The game involved an extremely promising level of skill, competitiveness and passion from both teams so early in the Camogie season. Killeagh proved the stronger of the two teams in the final, showing sheer determination and a will for success. The day finished with our Senior Captain for 2019, Rachel Sheehan, being presented with the cup by our very own Sheila Spillane. After a consistently strong performance across all four games, Killeagh’s Caoimhe Harney was rewarded ‘Player of the Tournament’.

It was a fantastic day of Camogie celebrating the continued contribution and love for the game of camogie by the legend who is Sheila Spillane.

MINORS Our Minors have been busy this week with another league game against Enniskeane played away on Tuesday. Report next week.

UNDER 12s Our U12s also played a blitz with St. Catherine’s and Dungourney in St. Catherine’s last Saturday. The girls played out of their skins and have proving that their training is standing to them with their fantastic performances across the games. They look forward to the next blitz in Watergrasshill on Saturday the 6th of April in which we will be entering two Killeagh teams because of our positively big numbers.

SENIORS Our Senior team kick off their first round of the league on Wednesday 3rd of April vs Ballygarvan at 7pm in Killeagh.

SAFEGUARDING COURSE

On Monday the 1st of April we had our final safeguarding course in Killeagh GAA complex. People have been very responsive to this course, making sure all members of the club that were to complete the course have now done so.
