BOYS IN GREEN GET FIRST WIN OF LEAGUE CAMPAIGN

RedFM Division 1 Hurling League - Killeagh 0-16 Kanturk 0-10

On our fourth attempt, our senior hurlers got their opening win of the 2019 Division 1 Hurling League on Sunday afternoon last as we overcame a poor start to get the better of a hard-working Kanturk side at Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Three of our defenders – Jack, Kevin and Killian – were playing their second game in less than 24 hours, as was Keane Kelly Budds when he appeared in the second half. This win moves us up the Division 1 table as the new format of points (5 for a win, 3 for a draw, 1 for a loss) saw us move on to 10 points. A strong wind blew down the pitch for this game, and Kanturk made great use of the wind advantage in the opening twenty minutes, by which point they led by 0-8 to 0-2. We were restricted to an early pointed ‘65 from Eoghan Keniry and a quick catch and shot from Andrew Leahy, while Lorcan McLoughlin was in fine form for the visitors, who were without their three Cork panellists Nash, Browne and Walsh. The final ten minutes of the first half saw us gain a foothold in the game, as three frees from Eoghan and points from Philip O’Neill and Matthew Murphy reduced the margin to just one at Pa Beausang’s half time whistle. The winning of this game was in the blistering start we made to the second half, with four quickfire points from play – Eoghan, Brian Collins, Andrew Leahy and Philip – in the opening three minutes. This gave us a three point lead, and while our performance from there to the end was patchy, with just five more points and a 20 minute window where we only added one point to our total, we did enough to hold on, with Ryan McCarthy (on his senior debut) scoring from play and then a 90-metre free to secure victory. Our defence was also very solid throughout, particularly Jack O’Rourke and Cian Fogarty in the pivotal central positions. Next up we welcome Ballymartle, always a difficult opposition for us, to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Sunday morning next, March 31st at 11:30am. Our Championship game is confirmed versus Na Piarsaigh (currently top of the league table after three wins from three), on Easter Sunday, April 21st in Páirc Ui Rinn at 2pm. Put it in the diary now!

Team: Colin Walsh; Allen Keniry, Jack O’Rourke, Sean Long; Kevin Murphy, Cian Fogarty, Killian Treacy; Mikey Fitzgerald, Eoghan Keniry (0-7, 0-4f, 0-1 from ’65); Philip O’Neill (0-2), Kieran Lane, Matthew Murphy (0-1); Andrew Leahy (0-2), Gary Leahy, Shane Smiddy. Subs used: Brian Collins (0-2), Ryan McCarthy (0-2, 0-1 f), Keane Kelly Budds, Kevin Fennelly

'ROY OF THE ROVERS’ PERFORMANCE TO QUALIFY FOR THE FINAL

East Cork U21 B Football Championship - Glenbower Rovers 3-8, Fr. O'Neill's 3-6

An exciting game of football played in good spirit by both teams at Copperalley in Youghal on Saturday afternoon last finished with a narrow, but deserved win for our young footballers, who are improving gradually with every outing. Our team showed three changes from the previous game against Castlelyons, with Fionn McDonnell, Jamie Landers and Paul Delaney starting. Fr. O’Neill’s got off to a flyer with a goal on two minutes and it took our boys time to settle into a rhythm. A goal by Paul after 10 minutes, responding quickly to a rebound from the crossbar from a Sean Walsh shot, squared the scoreboard, and Paul was on hand on 21 minutes to finish another goal after good work from Kevin Murphy. A Sean Walsh point, his second, and first from play, gave us a 2-2 to 1-0 lead on 22 minutes, but we then switched off for ten minutes, allowing O’Neills to score three points and then a second goal on the stroke of half time. Having played well, we found ourselves trailing – 2-3 to 2-2. The second half required an extra effort and it came throughout the team, but particularly from the ‘leaders’ – Kilian Treacy, Jack O’Rourke, Christy Coughlan, Keane Kelly Budds and Cathal Deane, and speedster David Ogbebor who caused havoc throughout and scored 1-2 in a blistering three minute spell mid-way through the second half. Sean Walsh, excellent all through, did the rest of the damage, with four kicked frees – two before and two after Dave’s cameo. On 44 minutes we led by 3-6 to 2-4 but O'Neill's kept the pressure up and two frees followed by a goal on the 56th minute left the scoreline precariously in our favour – 3-8 to 3-6 – squeaky bum time! Our defence held firm, our ball retention was excellent, and when the last dangerous high ball into our square was booted clear, reiteoir Jim Daly blew the final whistle, giving us the victory, our efforts warranted. Well done to everyone involved, to the full panel and Bainisteoir John O’Connor, aided by Eoin Fitzgibbon and Aaron Walsh. We have qualified to play Castlemartyr in the semi-final on Saturday next, while O’Neill’s face the winners of the other group, Glenville, in their semi-final. Stay tuned to our social media for up to date information regarding time & venue.

Team: Ciaran O’Rourke; Fionn McDonnell, Christy Coughlan, Adrian Galvin; Jamie Landers, Jack O’Rourke, Cathal Fitzgibbon; Barry Motherway, Cathal Deane; Kevin Murphy, Killian Treacy, Keane Kelly Budds; Paul Delaney (2-0), David Ogbebor (1-2), Sean Walsh (0-6, 0-5 frees). Subs used: Dara Motherway, Kieran Daly.

UNDER 14’S A MULTITALENTED PANEL

Under 14 Football League - Killeagh 7-9 Whitechurch 4-12

The U14 team played Whitechurch in a football league game last Saturday. What a week this panel of players have had between club and school games - many of them participating in the Rice Cup during the week - some even playing soccer / rugby games that morning! Despite that, they fought extremely hard for each other yet again, putting in a great team effort and playing some really good football. There were many great goals and points scored from different individuals and overall it was an outstanding team performance on undoubtedly very tired legs. They did themselves and their club very proud. Well done to all.

UNDER 13 SQUAD ON A ROLL IN THE BIG BALL GAME

Fé 13 Football League - Killeagh/Itas 6-14 Na Piarsaigh 3-2

 Youghal 4-5 Killeagh/Itas 7-7

The U13 squad had another great week in the football league.

On Thursday night they played Na Piarsaigh in a flood lit Pairc Ui Cinneide. The home side got off to a flying start and were well on top by half time. They remained dominant in the second half and finished the game strongly winning by a wide margin

On Sunday March 24th, we took on near neighbours Youghal in our next football game. Killeagh/Itas had the home side under pressure from the word go. Goals were buried in the net and fabulous football across the entire team had us well on top at half time. The second half saw another fine display of teamwork and determination to secure a fine win.

KILLEAGH PLAYERS LEAD CORK UNDER 16 HURLERS

Cork under 16’s were playing in the Todd Nolan tournament in Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry on Saturday. They lost to Tipperary in the first game but went on to beat Limerick in the 3rd/4th place play off, beating them 1-21 to 2-11. Well done to the panel including Killeagh/Itas players George Walsh Wallace & Captain of the Cork Team Jamie Fogarty.

KILLEAGH AGAIN LEAD MIDLETON CBS TO MUNSTER FINAL

As if there was not enough drama involving Midleton CBS in Munster colleges games in the Dr. Harty competition, that theme continued last Wednesday in the White Cup in Bushy Park. The Midleton CBS U15 Hurlers beat De La Salle with Colm Leahy scoring a goal deep into injury time to snatch the win. Well done to Killeagh/Itas players Colm Leahy, Dylan McCarthy, David Buckley, Callum Martin White & Daniel Walsh.

KILLEAGH CAMOGIE NOTES by Tricia Treacy

SHEILA SPILLANE SENIOR TOURNAMENT.   On Saturday next 30th of March we are hosting a Senior Camogie Blitz. We named the tournament after the founder of our club who is also our current club president. In all the years from 1973 when Killeagh Camogie was set up to the present day, Sheila Spillane has been at the core. Sheila has been a constant supporter of our club and camogie in general for many years. This gesture is a small token from our club to honour a great club stalwart. The Blitz will involve 6 senior teams - Killeagh, St. Catherine’s, Sarsfields, Cloughduv, Courcey Rovers and An other.  The games will be 15 minutes a side and each team will play 2 games.  The top two teams from each side will compete in the final.  The tournament begins at 2pm with the final scheduled to be played at 4.40pm. The presentation will be a 5.30pm.  Come along and support what will be a great afternoon of Camogie.

MINOR CAMOGIE.   The Minor Camogie team played their first league game of the season at 5.15pm in Killeagh against The Glen on Sunday afternoon last.  Conditions were excellent for the game.  Unfortunately, Killeagh were missing some of their key players due to illness and injury but nonetheless gave an excellent account of themselves.  The Glen got off to a great start and didn’t relinquish their substantial lead for the entire game. Killeagh settled into the game and played an outstanding second half but the Glen proved to be overall too strong on the day and ran our easy winners in the end.

Team:  Abby Bulman. Ava Cunningham, Anna Sheehan, Niamh O’Connor, Chloe Walsh, Sarah Roche, Saoirse Burns, Sarah Kent, Aine O’Driscoll, Amy McCarthy, Ciara Hegarty, Orla Cowhig, Suzanne Dignam, Andrea Walsh, Caoimhe Murray and Lorna McCarthy.

Their next league game will be against Enniskeane.  Date and time to be confirmed.

U15 INTER DIVISIONAL BLITZ.  Congratulations to Anna Brenner and Suzanne Dignam who were members of the Imokilly team who won the Inter Divisional Blitz on Saturday last. The Imokilly team beat Muskerry and Seandun to reach the final.  It was a great win against Carrigdhoun in the final and very exciting for all the girls involved.

CORK INTERMEDIATES: Ciara Daly, Caoimhe Harney and Rachel Sheehan were involved in their final group league game on Sunday last. They played Down at Castle road.  Though the Cork team won 0.11 to 0.13 it wasn’t enough to see them through to the final stages of the league.

U10s and U12s Both groups are enjoying their outdoor sessions under the watchful eyes of Kieran and Johnno.   It’s great to see so many enthusiastic girls having fun and learning the skills of the game.
