KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, January 13th 2019

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

A super turnout of over 130 people turned out last Thursday January 10th in superb conditions to walk around Páirc Uí Chinnéide for the Killeagh Healthy Club’s involvement in the Ireland Lights Up Operation Transformation initiative. There were people literally of all ages (from 2 to over 75!)

We had walkers, joggers, runners & people who literally couldn’t stop talking but everyone enjoyed their nights walking and afterwards all were treated to a cuppa and some fresh fruit in our meeting room.

We are ‘lit up’ and welcome everyone in the community for each of the next six Thursdays between 7.00 and 9.00 p.m. – can you join us?

Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to have Operation Transformation Leader Pamela McDermott Swayne will join us around the fields of Páirc Uí Chinnéide.

LOTTO UPDATE: What would you do with €11,600...

The last club lotto draw took place on Tuesday 15th January. The jackpot was €11,400. The numbers drawn were 7, 15, 24 & 29. There was no winner of the Jackpot. The €30 Lucky Dip winners drawn were Ger Ahern, Aideen Clifford & the Griffin Family, Redbarn while this week’s €30 voucher was for Fitzgibbon’s Garage and that was won by John McCarthy.

Next week’s jackpot will be €11,600 on Tuesday 22nd of January. How would you spend the Jackpot if you won it next week!!! Want to play...?? Get your €2 out, buy your lotto tickets in the local businesses around the village or buy online @

With the good weather continuing over the past week, some of our teams including the Senior Hurling and Junior Football teams have returned to the training paddocks to take the 2019 season head on. The ball alley is getting busy too with some of our younger sides also getting back into the groove.

The Killeagh GAA Golf Society are entering their 27th season & if you are interested in joining the Golf Society for their variety of trips away throughout the year for 2019, give Ray Rochford a call on 087-2330054.

Their first outing of the new season is to Fota Island on Tuesday 22nd Jan with the Cost being €40 and the timesheet is with Ray, so get your names down ASAP for best available slots.

Bookings are now being taken for the weekend trip away to Treacy’s Hotel Enniscorthy for March 1st & 2nd. They will be playing at Enniscorthy Golf club on 1st March, while they head to Bunclody Golf Club on March 2nd. For more details, please contact Tim 087 2542193 or Society Captain Conor 086 6015056 or Colin 087 9489446.

The County Board Draws took place last Tuesday night in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and were completed in 40 minutes. There were some intriguing draws in all championships. But in Round 1 of the Senior Hurling championship, we were 5th out of the hat and drawn against Na Piarsaigh! Should be a very much an interesting tie in April.

The East Cork Board Draws will be made on Wednesday 30th of January for the respective Junior Championships.

If you are interested in entering the above draw, please contact Dave Barry on 087-8123352 or any committee member. The January Draw is only around the corner on Thursday January 31st, which will take place in the GAA Clubhouse. €20,000 cash first prize this month & a load of prizes to be given away as well on night.

After our successful walk last week, we stay in the Ballymacoda / Ladysbridge parish for our next walk with Monthly Walk No. 37 taking place around Kilcredan & Ballycrenane on Sunday February 10th (this is our registration day also so a busy GAA day!). Details to follow here...

Best wishes to the Killeagh-Itas players involved in Harty Cup semi-final next Saturday 26th January with Midleton CBS as they face a tough De La Salle side from Waterford down in the Fraher Field at 1:30pm. These sides played out a 2-10 to 1-13 draw in the group stages, so next weeks should be interesting. The Killeagh-Itas players included are Olan Broderick, Dylan Hogan, Richie Landers, Padraig Leahy & Ryan McCarthy! Your support for our lads is very much appreciated!

We would like to wish our colleagues at Killeagh Point to Point a very big well done on the running of a successful race meeting at Boulta Schooling Gallops last Sunday 20th January. But all the talk of course (and rightly so) is the super recovery from Cappoquin jockey Mikey Sweeney aboard Ask Heather. If you haven’t seen it, it is well worth a watch! As they say, it has gone ‘Viral’ all over the world!!

Remember, stay tuned to our social media channels on Facebook ‘Killeagh GAA’ or Twitter @KilleaghGAA for further up to date information

It may be the middle of January and the height of winter but there is still plenty happening or being planned within the club.

Races: If you had the pleasure of attending the hospitality tent at the races on Sunday you would have bumped into some of our members who were giving a helping hand. The races were always a huge fundraiser for us. Thanks to all who helped this year by helping out in the Hospitality Tent.

Senior Team: The girls began training for the coming year on Wednesday evening last, under the guidance of Blondie, Ciaran, Kevin, Johnny, Donie and Christine. No doubt but there were a few sore bodies on Thursday!

Under 12s: Training is beginning in the GAA hall on Wednesday January 30th at 6pm. Aine Power will be putting the girls through their paces under the watchful eye of Len O’Regan. All welcome.

Under 9s & Under 10s: Kieran Scully and John O’Connor will be training this group starting on Saturday February 2nd at 11.30 – 12.30

Cork Camogie: Began their campaign on Sunday last playing Tipperary in ‘The Ragg’. Laura, Hannah, Chloe and Stephanie were all involved. The game was a tough opener with Cork running out winners in a very tough contest on a scoreline of 10 points to 7.

St. Marys High School: Congratulations to our Killeagh representatives on the Camogie team who won the All Ireland final at the end of last year. They were honoured at the Rebel Óg Awards last Friday evening. A huge congrats to Niamh O’Connor, Aine O’Driscoll, Megan O’Donovan and Sarah Kent. Niamh, Sarah, Anna Brenner, Meabh Heffernan and Suzanne Dignam were in action again for St. Marys on Saturday last in the junior Munster final played in Castle Road, Blackrock. Unfortunately, the team was beaten by a very physical and excellent Clonakilty side. Hard luck girls.

1... Killeagh Camogie Registration Night on February 7th at 6:30pm.

2... The 4 mile Road race on March 10th is only 7 weeks away. Plenty of time to get on your runners and get running or walking to prepare for the day.

3.... Fun, Fitness, Friends and Football continues on Wednesdays at 8.30 in the GAA. Women over 18 are welcome. A great way to stay fit with a lot of fun and laughs to be had.
