KILLEAGH GAA NEWS, January 13th 2019

By Patrick Mulcahy, Killeagh GAA PRO

“If you build it, they will come” or “If you light it, they will walk” perhaps should be the motto for the 2019 iteration of Killeagh Healthy Club’s involvement in the Ireland Lights Up Operation Transformation initiative. A super atmosphere saw over 100 people of all ages (under 2 to over 70 anyway!) pop down to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Thursday evening last, January 10th, to walk and talk around our lit-up facilities and enjoy a quick cuppa at the end of the evening. We are ‘lit up’ and welcome everyone in the community for each of the next seven Thursdays between 7.00 and 9.00 p.m. – can you join us?

Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to have Operation Transformation Leader Pamela McDermott Swayne will join us around the fields of Páirc Uí Chinnéide. So, stay tuned here and to our social media channels on Facebook ‘Killeagh GAA’ or Twitter @KilleaghGAA.

We have through hundreds of minutes from past meetings, racked the brains of many and couldn’t find the answer?! But last Wednesday saw a small bit of history at the Killeagh GAA Committee Meeting as for the first time in the club, we had three Generations of the Scullys represented at the one meeting. They were David ‘Junior’ Scully (Vice-President), Ger Scully (Vice-Chairman), Olivia O’Rourke (neé Scully) (Juvenile Secretary), Kieran Scully (Registrar of Club) & Jack O’Rourke (U21 Players Rep.) Some testament to one family who are involved within the club in many ways.

On Sunday last, January 13th, the New Year Resolutions were in force in Ladysbridge as an enthusiastic group of 22 walkers, eager to get walking quickly, met in Ladysbridge car park for Healthy Clubs Project Monthly Walk No. 36, a double-loop walk around the environs of Droichead na Scuab, which looked picturesque in the winter sunlight. We welcomed five new walkers to our ranks, and after the introductions, away we went. Loop one saw us head south on the road to Garryvoe, before taking a left and another left back around Knockglass, with a slight incline to get the pulses racing. After completing this loop back to the village (just over 4km), the group then proceeded to the opposite side of the village, heading west towards the newly-created walking path connecting the village with Castlemartyr Wood. All in all, a great way to start a Sunday morning, good for the mind and the body!

We stay in the Ballymacoda / Ladysbridge parish for our next walk with Monthly Walk No. 37 taking place around Kilcredan & Ballycrenane on Sunday February 10th (this is our registration day also so a busy GAA day!). Details to follow.

Well done to the Killeagh-Itas players involved in Harty Cup quarter-final action last Wednesday with Midleton CBS as they comprehensively defeated Our Ladys, Templemore in Bansha 7-15 to 19 points. The players included are Olan Broderick, Dylan Hogan, Richie Landers, Padraig Leahy & Ryan McCarthy who chipped in 1-2 including a well taken goal from a sideline cut!! The Semi-final is against De La Salle of Waterford on January 26th, your support for our lads is very much appreciated!

We would like to wish our colleagues at Killeagh Point to Point the very best of luck as they run their race meeting at Boulta Schooling Gallops next Sunday 20th January. It is their first meeting away from Knockane in 35 years.

Our annual AGM was held, in the GAA complex on Tuesday 8th January.  The large attendance was welcomed by our Presidents Sheila Spillane and Pat Kirby.  An address was given by our outgoing Chairperson Tricia Treacy and a complex report of our year’s activities by secretary Geraldine Sheehan.  Mary Motherway read a detailed report of the financial details of the club.

Comprehensive reports of each grade from Senior to Under 8s were given by the coaches and managers of each team.  The managers/coaches were thanked for their contribution and for the giving of their time throughout the year. The meeting welcomed Chairperson of the Killeagh GAA Colman Motherway who addressed the meeting.

The election of officers was as follows;

Presidents: Sheila Spillane & Pat Kirby

Chairperson: Geraldine Sheehan

Secretary: Jacinta McCarthy

Ass. Secretary: Katie Lenihan

Treasurer:  Mary Motherway

PRO: Tricia Treacy

Childrens Officer: Orla O’Regan

We welcomed many new faces to our committee this year. After various discussions the meeting ended with a very welcome cup of tea!  Details of our coaches and managers will follow over the coming weeks.

On St. Stephens Day the annual GAA long puck was played between Mount Uniacke and Killeagh. From early morning, the roads were busy with an enormous turn out for a very worthy cause. All proceeds going to Marymount.  A big number of girls, players and members played or walked.

On Friday 11th of January the victorious Senior, Intermediate, Minor and Under 16 teams were honoured at a banquet in Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork.  Our club was well represented by Chloe Sigerson, Laura Treacy, Hannah Looney and Stephanie Beausang on the Senior panel.  Niamh O’Keeffe on the Intermediate and Ellana Kelleher and coach Ger Horgan on the under 16s.  These players have represented our club with great success during 2018.  Well done to all.
