Castlemartyr GAA Notes

28 December, 2009

A marvellous day was had by all on St Stephen’s Day when Castlemartyr GAA held their annual Long Puc. Although the roads were icy in the morning, by Puck Off time at 1.45 there was sufficient improvement in conditions for the carnival to commence for another year.

A large crowd participated yet again and all though one would have thought with all the puddles on the road that the scoring would have been higher than normal, at the end of the day a new course record was established.

During the prize giving ceremony afterwards in Shortts Bar, it was a somewhat disbelieving Johnny Walshe that presented the prizes. After several perhaps libellous comments, he presented first prize to the jubilant captain Adrian Bowens, with a tally of 41 shots. This was Killeagh resident, Adrian’s, second victory in three years and he was in this occasion, ably assisted by Shane and John O Donavan.

Second prize, with a total of 42 pucks, went to Derek Bowen’s team, and helping him was the veteran Dan Barry and back home for Christmas John O Doherty.

Third prize on 44 shots went to Dessie Murphy’s team which also comprised of Declan Morgan and Adrian O Rourke.

The cheer of the evening was reserved for the Booby Prize winners. Led by Kerryman Maurice Cahill, it was inevitable his team would have no chance and they staggered home having failed to breach the ton.

But of course this day is not about the competition but more about blowing off the Christmas cobwebs and getting out and meeting all the people that come back once a year for this great event.

Roll on 2010.
