Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 17.9.18

Castlelyons 1-14 Courcey Rovers 0-17

We hit for Páirc Uí Rinn on Friday evening last to take on Courcey Rovers in the premier intermediate hurling championship having defeated Youghal almost five months ago. We knew Courceys would be tough as we have always found it hard to get past them in any competition. The evening was ideal for hurling and the pitch in good condition. Referee Joe Larkin threw in the sliotar got out of the way and both teams hurled in a very sporting manner. Ronan O Regan had our first score 0-1 from play and Tadgh O Sullivan levelled for them from a free. Barry Murphy had a fine point for us and when Ciaran McGann was fouled, and Alan Fenton despatched the free we were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead and motoring. O Sullivan was accurate from frees and play for them but so was Alan Fenton for us and Anto Spillane returning after a lay off was proving a handful for the Courceys backs and doing well as it was 0-7 apiece after twenty minutes. Once again, we were guilty of misfiring on long range missiles as at least three of them were off target. This was a time of dominance when it might have been more rewarding to drop in the ball. Courceys had ideas of their own and fought back hard going into a two-point lead and but Barry Murphy and Anto Spillane replied for us with good points. Courceys were doing all the hurling now as O Sullivan and Twomey moved about the place a lot and created space as the ball was put in with accuracy. However, despite their dominance the score was just 0-10 to 0-9 at the short whistle in favour of Courceys.

We started the second half well as Niall O Leary, Colm Barry and substitute Declan Varner got to grips with the Courcey forward line. Then Barry Murphy showing up well for ball for gained possession and moved a mighty pass into Mike Spillane putting him in the clear although some distance out. Mike is the man for those ones and sure enough he moved like a rocket and obliged with a bullet into the far corner to the delight of the large following. We were hurling better but it was battle royal with our backs and the Courceys attack. O Sullivan and Twomey were on the score board for Courceys assisted by their midfielder Killian Moloney. Aidan O Sullivan and Tommy Carroll were going well as were Darragh Lawlor and Eoin Maye and we enjoyed our best spell. They were attempting to drag our ring commander Colm Spillane about the place and kept the ball away from him. We were three points up with just ten minutes left. Then disaster for us as an outstanding Niall O Leary, who was outstanding for us, went down with a nasty injury and play was held up for a few minutes. To make matters worse we had a free at that time, but the time out did not help, and we were off target. Courceys went down field and tacked on a point which meant a possible four up was now just two up and sure enough Courceys came at us hammer and tongs and put three points on the board one an enormous banger of a free from their goalie and the last one putting them up a point by O Sullivan. Into injury time but fair play to our lads as they kept going and Alan Fenton was fouled. Mike Spillane was unerring with the resultant free to send the game to a replay.

The standard of hurling was good in this game and well handled by referee Joe Larkin. Courceys are a good side and we did well but there is more in us and no doubt our mentors will be working hard on this over the next week. Best of luck lads. The replay is now settled for Páirc Uí Rinn next Friday evening 21.9.18 at 7.30pm and once again we would appreciate your support as we need it all. Castlelyons Abú

Imokilly advance in County SHC.

Champions and roaring favourites almost came a cropper in this Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday as Newcestown roared on by a huge crowd came within a point on time. Imokilly with an array of talent including four current senior players and many more who wore the rebel jersey recently were lethargic and unable to match the strength of Newcestown for long periods of the game. They pulled away towards the end, but very poor defending left the West Cork men back into it. Judging on this display Imokilly need serious improvement if they are to progress and, of course our next opponents are UCC who showed no mercy in dispatching Sarsfields in the other game on Sunday. We have the hurlers but have we the combination and determination well we’ll know in two weeks’ time. Best of luck lads.
