Ulster Bank Co Minor “C” (12 a-side) Hurling League – Final

Bride Rvs 2-08 Setanta 1-09

Bride Rvs ended their season with some silverware when in Rathcormac on Sunday morning last they took the Ulster Bank Co Minor “C” (12 a-side) Hurling League Title after having two points to spare over Setanta in what was a most entertaining contest.

Conditions for this game were perfect and with the surface in Rathcormac in top class condition, despite the recent run of bad weather, both sides are to be congratulated for the display they served up.

Setanta had the better of the first half exchanges and with points from Cormac Field (free) and Odhran O’Halloran they went into an early lead. Bride Rvs opened their account with a point from Jason Manix after some good work from Daniel Lane in the 8th minute but with Sean Murphy in goal, who brought off a number of impressive saves during the hour, Robert Daly, Tomas McGrath, Pat Fitton, Shane Burke and Cormac Field leading by example their opponents began to increase their efforts. A well executed point from Burke increased their advantage and it was further enhanced when a high ball from Fitton ended up in the net to see them lead 1-03 to 0-01 by the 11th minute. Although the visitors continued to take the game to their opponents they found scores hard to come by as the home defence were coping well under pressure and it was the 22nd minute before they scored again when Field converted a placed ball to see them go in at the break leading 1-04 to 0-02 with Bride Rvs second point coming just before the interval from a placed ball by Daniel Lane.

On the resumption Bride Rvs came out in a much more determined mood with Michael Howard, William O’Leary, Jason Pratt, Daniel Lane, Jason Manix and sub Stephen O’Leary, who was introduced with great effect for the second half, increasing their efforts. They attacked from the restart and straight from the throw in the ball was worked up-field which saw Manix finished the move to the net. Two minutes later they took the lead for the first time and this time the honour fell to O’Leary who made no mistake in finding the net following some great work from Fergus Collins. These scores gave them confidence and as they maintained their momentum they followed up with points from Lane (free), O’Leary and Manix to lead 2-05 to 1-04 by the 41st minute. As both sides had a player dismissed at the three-quarter stage Setanta began to make a comeback and with two points from Pat Fitzgibbon and one from Fitton they reduced the deficit to the bare minimum as the game was reaching its final phase 1-07 to 2-05. Bride Rvs were now coming under more pressure but again the defence stood firm and they gave themselves some breathing space with a brace of points from placed balls by Lane and one from play by O’Leary to regain their advantage. However Setanta battled on and again reduced the margin following points from Field and Fitton but time was not on their side as Bride Rvs held out to take the title on the final scoreline of 2-08 to 1-09.

Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Football League – Final

Clyda Rvs 2-13 St Vincents 1-04

Clyda Rvs made amends for their championship defeat at the final hurdle by Bandon when in Mourne Abbey on Friday night last they accounted for St Vincents in the Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Football League Final.

Playing with the aid of the wind in the opening half Clyda Rvs made most of their advantage when with two points apiece from Conor O’Sullivan and Cian O’Sullivan they raced into the lead by the 8th minute. Playing with confidence they maintained their momentum with Chris O’Connell, David Madden, Conor O’Sullivan, Michael Linehan, Conor Flanagan and Cian O’Sullivan to the fore and with a goal and a point from Flanagan followed by a point from Conor O’Sullivan they cemented their position. St Vincents were now under extreme pressure and their cause was not helped when in the 22nd minute Michael Linehan broke through for their second goal with Conor O’Sullivan adding a further point. St Vincent finally lifted the siege just before the interval when Ryan Fielding slotted over their opening point to go in at the break trailing 0-01 to 2-07.

On the resumption St Vincents doubled their account with an early point from Stephen Maguire to give them some hope but their opponents were not so accommodating and responded with a brace of points from Conor O’Sullivan to extend their advantage by the 41st minute. After an exchange of points between Luke O’Connor and Cian O’Sullivan Clyda Rvs again stepped up the pace and with points from Conor O’Sullivan, Michael Linehan and Sean O’Connell they sealed their victory as the game was entering its final phase. To their credit St Vincents never gave up the chase and with Ian O’Sullivan in goal, Kyle Lynch, Luke O’Connor, Shane Cunningham and Stephen Maguire battling to the last they were rewarded with a late goal from Cunningham followed by a point from Lynch but unfortunately for them the game was well outside their grasp at this stage leaving Clyda Rvs to run out comfortable winners on the final scoreline of 2-13 to 1-04.

After the game the cup was presented to the winning captain, Chris Kenny, by Peter Hogan, Chairman of the Cork Co Minor Board to the great delight of the Clyda Rvs supporters.

Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Hurling League - Semi-Final

Shandrum 2-12 Eire Og 3-06

Shandrum’s aspirations of achieving the double remain on coarse following their three point success over Eire Og in this Ulster Bank Co Premier 2 Minor Hurling League Semi-Final which was played in Newtownshandrum on Thursday night last.

In what was a an interesting encounter Eire Og played with the wind in the opening and got off to the ideal start when Michael O’Shea broke through for a goal in the first minute. Shandrum responded with a pointed free from Jerry Lane only to see John Dineen maintain Eire Og’s advantage with a neat point in the 8th minute. After an exchange of points between Lane (free) and Kevin Hallissey Shandrum began to lift their game and with the unerring free-taking of Lane they reduced the deficit to the bare minimum by the end of the opening quarter 0-04 to 1-02. Spurred into action Eire Og upped their game and with John Kelleher, Fionn O’Rourke, John Dineen, Craig O’Driscoll and Kevin Hallissey leading the charge they increased their margin after a long delivery from O’Rourke was billowed to the net by Hallissey. Unfortunately their cause was not helped when Hallissey had to retire with an injury but nevertheless they continued to take the game to their opponents and with two points from Dineen they went in at the break leading 2-04 to 0-05 with Shandrum’s fifth point coming from the stick of Jamie Coughlan.

Shandrum upped the tempo of the game on the resumption and with Stephen Young, Eoin Doyle, David O’Connor, Jamie Coughlan and Jerry Lane coming more into view they took the game to their opponents. After an exchange of points between Lane and Dineen the deficit was reduced to two points by the 38th minute following a hat trick of points from Lane. The re-introduction of Hallissey at the three-quarter stage paid dividends when he was on hand to blast a 21 metre free to the net to see Eire Og lead 3-05 to 0-09 but their joy was short lived when Jamie Coughlan found the net for their opponents despite the best of goal-keeper Aidan Twomey. This score sprung Shandrum into action and with Lane adding another brace of points the sides were on level terms by the 53rd minute 1-11 to 3-05. The home side were now beginning to gain control and after Lane, who ended up with a personal tally of 0-11, put them into the lead for the first time with three minutes remaining and their decisive score came two minutes later when a long range free taken by Lane broke to the inrushing Mark Linehan who finished the ball to the net. Although Eire Og fought back with a point from Hallissey there was to be no stopping Shandrum who qualified for the final on a scoreline of 2-12 to 3-06 where they will meet Castlelyons in Mourne Abbey this evening at 7.45 pm.
