Junior Hurling:
The hurlers travelled to Newtownshandrum on Sunday last as they made their first ever appearance in the Munster Junior B Hurling Championship. The lads emerged victorious overcoming the challenge from St. Brendan's in Ardfert Co. Kerry on a scoreline of 12pts to 1-07.
Though given little chance in some quarters the lads from the village had been looking forward to this game for some time and preparations had gone really well so we felt we had nothing to fear.
Despite the blustery weather the conditions were good underfoot so there would be no excuses.
We started well and opened the scoring through Scott Richards. We then put a couple of efforts wide before Ardfert upped the ante by scoring a goal after 10mins. Game on!
There was no quarter given or asked for the remainder of the hour as the players from both sides battled for supremacy in what proved to be a physical encounter. The Village midfield were beginning to get on top with Vincent O'Sullivan winning more possession ably assisted by Trevor Costigan and Dave Fitzmaurice, who probably had his best game in a Ballinacurra shirt. Further scores from Brian Sigerson and Denis McCarthy and a further 4pts from the prolific Scott Richards left the lads going into the break leading on a scoreline of 8pts to 1-03.
The second half was going to be a real battle with Ballinacurra now playing into a stiff wind. However the lads played a smart game of hurling, running the ball at every chance and managing to retain possession for long periods, thus starving the team from Ardfert of any meaningful possession themselves. Inevitably scores would be conceded but these were mainly the result of frees. The main thing was to keep a clean sheet as far as goals were concerned in the second half which the lads at the back managed to do under the expert guidance of Mark O'Sullivan and Trevor Richards.
Meanwhile, up front, Scott Richards continued to torment the St. Brendan's defence. He slotted over a further 2 points in the second half with Brian Sigerson adding another score of his own to maintain the lead which we would never relinquish.
Despite the best efforts of the St. Brendan's team, the Ballinacurra defence remained resolute throughout and the Kerry lads just became more and more frustrated as they just could not make the breakthrough needed. Scott Richards then slotted over the final insurance point with a free in the dying moments and the game was up. A well deserved win for the men from the Village!
