Cork County Minor Board Match Reports

Lisgoold travelled to Inchigeela on Saturday hoping to qualify for the final of the Ulster Bank Co Minor “C” (12 a-side) Football League but unfortunately for them they ran up against a strong Uibh Laoire side who ran out comfortable winners. Played in miserable conditions the winners played with the advantage of the elements in the opening half and went in at the break leading 1-06 to 0-02 with their goal coming from Denis O’Leary and points from David Hourihan, Cathal Vaughan and O’Leary. In the second half Uibh Laoire continued to set the pace with Sean O’Leary, Cathal Vaughan, Barry Murphy, Cal McCarthy, John McSweeney, David O’Riordan and Denis O’Leary to the forefront. Goals from the two O’Leary’s and Vaughan cemented their position and although Lisgoold tried their utmost to redress the issue there was to be no stopping Uibh Laoire who with further points from O’Leary, Vaughan and Hourihan advanced on the final scoreline of 4-07 to 0-08. This victory means that Uibh Laoire have now qualified for both the Championship and League finals.

Ulster Bank Co Premier Football Cup – Final

Clann na nGael 1-09 Kinsale 1-09 (aet)

A late pointed free at the end of extra-time by Jamie Walsh earned Clann na nGael a second bite of the cherry in this most exciting Ulster Bank Co Premier Minor Football Cup Final which was played in Castlehaven on Saturday night last.

Despite the inclement weather over the last few weeks the surface in Castlehaven was in fine condition and both sides must be complimented for the fare they served up on a night that did not lend to pretty football. In the end it was agreed all round that a draw was the fair result given the commitment and determination of all involved to overcome the elements.

Kinsale played with the aid of the strong wind in the opening half and quickly sat about to make most of their advantage with the opening point of the game coming from Alan Goold in the 2nd minute. Taking the game to their opponents, thanks to strong displays Michael Scully, Niall McCarthy, Jack Goold, Alan Goold, Gearoid Finn and Mark Eaton, they attacked at every opportunity resulting in further points from Goold and Mark Eaton to extend their advantage. A well executed goal from Eaton confirmed their authority before William O’Mahony got Clann na nGael off the mark with a point in the 28th minute but a point from Goold saw Kinsale go in at the break leading 1-04 to 0-01.

On the resumption Clann na nGael came out in a much more determined mood and with Sean Crowley, Derek Crowley, Jamie Walsh, William O’Mahony and Jack O’Mahony leading by example they quickly sat about to reduce the deficit. Three points from Walsh and one from O’Mahony reduced the margin to two by the 46th minute and now the game was beginning to swing in Clann na nGael’s favour. Kinsale were alive to the danger and halted the slide with a pointed free from Alan Goold but their opponents were growing in confidence and following a superb point from Paul Crowley they took the lead in the 53rd minute when William O’Mahony was on hand to rattle the net to leave the scoreline read 1-06 to 1-05. To their credit Kinsale lifted their game and with a point from Jack Tynan they brought the game to extra time 1-06 apiece.

After the first period of extra time it was still all square as both sides exchanged points Goold for Kinsale and Walsh for Clann na nGael. On the change-over Mark Eaton edged Kinsale in front with a neat point but their opponents were equal to the task with a similar score from James Cahalane. As excitement now reached fever pitch Kinsale got their noses in front with a pointed free from Goold with two minute remaining and it now looked as if they would take the title but Clann na nGael failed to surrender and in the final act of the game they got their just reward when they were awarded a free and Walsh was on hand to send over the equaliser to see they sides end up all square at 1-09 apiece.

In other games played over the weekend Kilbrittain qualified for the final of the Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Hurling League when they had a solid 3-10 to 1-04 home victory over Ballycosgry Rvs. The home side played with the wind in the opening half and with Ivan Burke, Padraig Sheehan, Jamie Moloney, Conor Moloney, Chris Hickey, Eamon Moloney, Jamie Wall and Declan Harrington to the fore they quickly asserted themselves. Points from Eamon Moloney, Jamie Wall, Conor Moloney and Declan Harrington sat the tone and when Harrington goaled in the 15th minute followed by a point from the same player they raced into a 1-05 advantage. Ballycosgry Rvs first point came from the stick of Ryan Hanley but Kilbrittain drove forward and responded with points from Conor Moloney and Alan O’Brien before points from Pat O’Callaghan and Hanley gave the “Avondhu” side a hope to go in at the break trailing 0-03 to 1-07.

On the resumption any hope that Ballycosgry Rvs had of a comeback were dashed when Jamie Wall broke through for a goal to be followed by a point from the same player. Although Ballycosgry Rvs had battling displays from TJ Garvey, Seamus Sheehan and Ryan Hanley the scores they needed were not forthcoming and it was late in the game before they finally broke through for a goal from Sheehan but in between Kilbrittain a consolidated their position with a goal from sub Dan Lynch and well taken points from Hickey and Harrington to run out comfortable winners.

In the Ulster Bank Co Minor “A” Football League St Vincents qualified to meet Clyda Rvs in the final when they had a hard fought 1-10 to 1-02 success over Sam Maguires in Pairc Uinsinn. The visitors played with the wind in the first half and led at the break 1-02 to 0-03 but in the second half the home increased their efforts and with Craig Cahill, Keith Sorenson, Michael Dalton, Anthony Harte and Phillip Cronin leading the charge they gradually sat about reducing the deficit. Some fine points from Stephen O’Connell and Stephen O’Driscoll helped them gain parity by the three-quarter stage but then they had a let off when goal-keeper Ian O’Sullivan showed his agility when he superbly saved a penalty. This save gave the “City” side a major boost and as they upped the tempo of the game they raced into a four point advantage thanks to points from O’Connell, O’Driscoll and Stephen Maguire. To their credit Sam Maguires maintained their challenge but the scores they needed never materialised and with five minutes remaining St Vincents sealed their victory when Shane Cunningham broke through for a goal to see his side run out deserving winners.
