Club Fixture Results:

U21 Football Championship

Glenville 1.11

Aghada 0.05

Glenville U21 Footballers headed for Rostellan last Friday night to take on Aghada in the 1st round of the championship. The lads have trained well and had two games in the Dick Cahill Cup leading up to the championship fixture with aghada. We knew from previous encounters that aghada would provide stiff opposition as we've played them a number of times at underage level. Glenville started the game well and took the game to aghada from the off. A pointed free from Dilan O Donovan got us off the mark and quickly Dan Dennehy kicked over 2 good frees. Glenville were putting in a strong performance and after 20 mins Glenville were 5pts to 1pt up courtesy of 2 well taken points from play from Dilan O'Donovan. Slowly Aghada got into their groove and 2 quick fire point brought the game to 2 pts and now the game was livening up. Seamus Curtin kicked a brilliant point from play on 26 mins and then a move starting with impressive corner back Shane O Reilly, led to Dan Dennehy burying the ball to the net for a great goal. Shortly after, the half time whistle sounded with the score at 1.06 to 3pts.

Glenville started the second half again very well and a monster score from PJ Dennehy set the tone early on. Glenville played good football and always kept aghada at arm’s length. Dilan kicked two excellent points from play followed by a 45. Aaron Spriggs kicked the final score of the day coming up from wing back to sail over a beauty to run out 1.11 to 0.05 winners. Glenville defence did very well, superbly led by captain Denis Hegarty, while limiting aghada to two second half points. Our midfielders Dylan and Padraig did huge work and our forward line worked well as a unit. As did our 3 subs when they were introduced in the second half. An impressive win for glenville but more improvements are needed if we are to progress further. For now well done on a solid team performance.
