KILLEAGH GAA NEWS March 4th 2018

By Colman Motherway, Killeagh GAA PRO

‘SNOW FUN’ FOR SOME, ‘NO FUN’ FOR OTHERS

What a week that was then! Two days of normality followed by three of soft white relentless precipitation, the like of which very few of us had ever remembered seeing at any point or at any time on this island of ours, followed in turn by two ‘fifty shades of grey’ days (I’m referring to the melting of the snow and its mixing with other environmental materials, not any novelty sporting events engaged in while more regular events were unavailable!) These are surely interesting times! So all training, matches and GAA events went by the board, including our Road Race, which we will reschedule as soon as a date becomes available. As such, it’s a relatively quiet week on the ‘real news’ front. The main news of the week, however, has to be the great unseen work done by neighbours in our community to help others in need throughout the ‘snowmergency’ that threatened us all. While fun was in plentiful supply around the place, help was required in many ways also, and it was provided by many. Ar scáth a chéile ….

UNDER 21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP POSTPONED

Our U21 football championship was to be played in Castlelyons on Friday March 2nd, with the winners progressing to the semi-final and the losers getting one more shot at redemption. Snow stopped play! Hopefully we’ll get it played sometime this week.

LOTTO NEWS – IN IT TO WIN IT? Our ninth Lotto draw of 2018 was held on Tuesday last, February 27th. The €2400 jackpot was not won this week. Numbers drawn were 8, 27, 30 and 32. John Anthony Fitzgerald, Peg O’Riordan and James Fogarty won €30 each, while Martina Lee won a €30 voucher for Killeagh Pharmacy. Next week we will have a jackpot of €2600 – if you’re not in…..

JUVENILE NEWS

TABLE QUIZ – SAVE THE DATE! FRIDAY MARCH 16th, THE OLD THATCH, 9.00 p.m.

Our Annual Christmas Quiz, which was deferred twice due to bereavements over the festive season, will take place on Friday March 16th in The Old Thatch, Killeagh. Throw in for Round 1 is at 9.00 p.m. – be there before that to get the best seats! Time to be getting your team organized for this fun night, with plenty of opportunity for fun and challenge! Tables of 4 are €40, and there will be delicious hot food served at the interval. This will also be one of the first

events to be held in the new extension in The Old Thatch, so if the quiz doesn’t float your boat, the “Room To Improve” discussions from those attending will be interesting!

HEALTHY CLUBS PROJECT

OPERATION TRANSFORMATION – THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Monday last, February 26th, saw the lights on in Páirc Uí Chinnéide for our final Monday of the “Ireland Lights Up Operation Transformation” walking campaign. We had the pleasure of welcoming our own Tracey Kennedy, Cathaoirleach, Coiste Chontae Chorcaí, who was taking advantage of her first free Monday evening of 2018 to get in some serious power-walking around our 550m route. Tracey spent some time catching up with friends and neighbours after her walk, and was also on hand to promote our Road Race. To acknowledge her accession to the highest office in Cork GAA, and her ongoing support of the work of the Healthy Clubs Project initiative in Killeagh and elsewhere, Tracey was presented with her own limited edition Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project t-shirt and GAA Healthy Clubs Top. No doubt Tracey will be showing off her new ‘style’ shortly. While our “Ireland Lights Up” Monday evenings are now over, our grounds at Páirc Uí Chinnéide are available for walkers / runners at any stage. No excuse – keep on walking / running!

GOLF SOCIETY NEWS

Before the snow came, the golfers got out on Tuesday last in West Waterford for the Annual Margaret Rochford / Tom Fitzgibbon Charity Day, which was extremely well attended with 50 golfers in attendance, and a fine day’s golf enjoyed by all. Cal Aherne was the popular winner of the Margaret Rochford Trophy while Andy Walsh won the Tom Fitzgibbon Trophy. Cal participated in this event when it began in 1991, and has played every year since, so this victory was warmly welcomed by all. Other winners on the day included Sean Treacy, Tim Murphy, Joan Ronayne, Dominic Fogarty and Mike Landers. Thanks as always to Ray Rochford and the Golf Society for organising this day. All proceeds go towards the Mercy Hospital Cancer Care Fund and donations can still be given to Ray or any of the organising committee up until April 20th. Well done everyone!
