KILLEAGH 4 MILE ROAD RACE – NEARLY THERE!

Spring is here and the runners are ready! Killeagh GAA hold our third Annual Killeagh Healthy Clubs 4 mile Road Race / Walk on Sunday next, March 4th. Niall Guerin Construction are our main race sponsors for 2018. Registration is at Páirc Uí Chinnéide from 9.00 a.m., with walkers first off at 10.00 a.m., followed by the runners at 11.00 a.m. With changing facilities, hot showers and post-race refreshments, as well as a fast, flat course, this race promises to be great value for runners. All cub members are asked to either participate in the event (running or walking) and if you are not in a position to take part in the race/walk, your help on the day would be greatly appreciated, as this is a great chance for us to showcase our fantastic facilities and our East Cork hospitality to the wider public. You can see a preview of the race on http://corkrunning.blogspot.com/2018/02/notice-killeagh-4-mile-road-racesun-4th.html. Hope to see you all on the 4th.

SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE CAMPAIGN UP AND RUNNING

This past week was a learning curve for our Senior Hurlers. It saw the start of the Red FM Senior Hurling League for 2018 in the new format. This year, our opening three games are against Sarsfields, Na Piarsaigh & Blackrock, all of whom reached the County Championship Semi-Finals last season. So, last Wednesday, after giving up home advantage at the request of the Cork County Board, we travelled to the brand new Pairc Ui Chaoimh, to play Sarsfields on the State of the Art 4G Pitch. This was a new experience for our players playing on a high quality 4G pitch as laid at Cork GAA’s HQ. With a mixed Killeagh team of youth and experience (including some senior debutants), and with our opponents recalling all their players from the Cork Senior panel for the clash, we found out early how ready Sars were for the start of the season. Unfortunately, we didn’t get away to the best of starts in the opening 30 minutes, conceding some sloppy goals and turning over easy possession. However, the second half saw a much improved performance from the lads and a lot of positives to take out of the game, with Brendan Delaney, Andrew Walsh and Gary Leahy raising green flags. The game finished Sarsfields 4-20 Killeagh 3-9. There were decent performances from an over worked Darren Cusack (who made his full senior debut between the posts), Kevin Murphy, Allen Keniry & Mikey Fitzgerald. It was a great experience for all to learn from Wednesday’s game and it is now on to the training field to get back to the drawing board for our next move. Also recently, we had a challenge game against

Mount Sion which was very physical and had fast hurling and great skill, with outstanding performances by Darren Cusack, Matthew Murphy, Jack O’Rourke, Daniel Walsh & Kevin Fennelly. Our next outing is a Round 2 Red FM league fixture away against Na Piarsaigh on Saturday 3rd March with a 6:30 p.m. throw in, while our third round is a home fixture versus Blackrock on Saturday 17th March with a 11:30 a.m. start in Páirc Ui Chinnéide. Players, management and staff are very appreciative of all the support we have got so far, and look forward in seeing you all next Saturday at this huge encounter.

UNDER 21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

And just like that, it’s here! The U21 football championship traditionally the opening championship of each season, began this weekend in East Cork. We’ll be hoping to go the direct route! Come to Castlelyons for 7.30 p.m throw in on Friday 2nd.

OPERATION TRANSFORMATION – THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

Monday last, February 19th, saw the lights on again for over 2 hours for our second last Monday of the “Ireland Lights Up Operation Transformation” walking campaign. We broke the 80 mark once again, so we are hoping to get over the 100 for our final evening of Light Up on Monday next, February 26th. This initiative has been a major success nationally – well done to those putting one foot in front of the other all around the country.

WALK NO. 26 – 4 MILE ROAD RACE

Our 4 Mile Road Race will be our March monthly walk – it’s a short 1 hour circuit so it’s suitable for all ages and those with buggies or other wheels.
