We had opening games in the Premier 2 Minor Football League and REDFM Senior Hurling League last weekend. The Minor defeated Cobh while the Seniors drew with St. Finbarrs.

Rebel Og Co Minor Football league.

At Pairc na Bride Rathcormac on Saturday last, Bride Rovers Minor Footballer’s, won the opening round of the Premier 2A Football League at the expense of Cobh. This group of players are playing Premier Football in 2018 as a result of their County “A” Championship title in 2016.  After an evenly contested hour’s football, the home team collected the points by the narrowest of margins.  The  home side got the  opening two scores on offer before Cobh replied with a similar score.  Then a Conleith Ryan goal pushed the Rovers well in front but just before half time, Cobh hit a purple patch with a brace of goals to lead at half time by 2-5 to 1-3.  The Rover’s up the pace in the second half and were in control in all sectors with a string of goal chances but none converted.  They still  trailed by seven points at the three-quarter stage but over the remaining minutes played their best football when they outscored the visitors to take the points on offer.  Final score Bride Rover 2-9, Cobh 2-8.

Next up in the MFL  is a trip to play Ilen Rovers in mid-March at Ilen's home venue which is located west of Skibbereen.

At a cold but dry Pairc na Bride St Finbarrs from Togher were the visitors for the opening game in the 2018 SHL. It was a close and tense game with both sides missing a lot of chances. We dominated the play for mush of the first half and could easily have been four or five points ahead at the break. As it was we led by just two, 6 to 4 and the game ended with both sides scoring ten points. Team F.Hogan, T. O Sullivan, J.Pratt, F. Collins, S.O Connor, B.Murphy, S. Walsh, B.Johnson, E. Roche, C. We took part in the County Scor Final with our Novelty Act 'I  Second That' last Saturday. Thanks to the Co Scor Committee who faclilitated us by allowing us on stage at half 6 in Ovens so we could make the Social in Mitchelstown. We performed very well but St James Club took the honours. Thanks to all who participated on the night.

It was a joyous occasion on Saturday night lasting the Firgrove Hotel when the presentation of the 2017 Minor and U 16 medals took place. After a superb meal Juvenile Club Chairman Mark O Connell welcomed all present and spoke of the fantastic achievements of the Club in winning 2 County Championships in 2017. He thanked all the players, mentors and parents. Between the two panels we have players with family backgrounds in Donegal, Waterford, Limerick, Roscommon, Kilkenny and Antrim and seven families who are newcomers to our Parish in recent years had players involved. The players are a superb bunch of lads with great camaraderie and spirit between them all. Other speakers were Club PRO john Arnold, former Juvenile Club Chairman Paddy Hynes, Adult Cub Chairman Richie O Regan and Fr O Donnell. Gerard Lane ex Chairman of Cork Co. Board and Bride Rovers Vice-chairman spoke also and said it was a very special night for him, presenting medals to players from his own Club. It was lovely, happy and convivial gathering.
