Lisgoold News

25 November, 2009

Floods and storms dominated the weekend, as the weather dictated what
matches were going to be played. Our minors had their football match
cancelled and its due to be played this weekend. Our junior footballers
lost their league final in a blustery Killeagh pitch, leaving the hurlers
with the last chance to snatch silverware for this season. They will also
play their final this weekend, please check locally for time and venue for
both minor and junior matches.

JFL Division 2 Final Nov 22nd

Lisgoold 0-8 (8)

Killeagh 4-8 (20)

It was floods of tears, as our football season was wrapped up on a
disappointing note, as we crashed to a four goal defeat. This was a very
bitter pill to swallow and to be honest Lisgoold were never 4 goals behind
Killeagh. But to be fair to the 'boys in green' the punished Lisgoold for
very sloppy play which led to four decent goals. The match started off in
blustery conditions and Lisgoold got off to a whirlwind start as Kieran
O'Shea got a lovely point after only a minute. It was tit for tat for the
first 10 minutes or so but the breakthrough came in the 11th minute when
Killeagh got a lovely goal which was well worked in. This proved to be a
bit of a killer blow, but our lads responded very well with Finbarr
Brosnan, Ciarán Cronin and Barry Ahern getting in scoring form. However a
controversial moment came with 4 minutes to go as a Lisgoold kick out was
won by the Killeagh full-forward, who then seemed to have took a few steps
too many, as he proceeded to blast it past Owen Heagrty. Although their
were furious protests from our players the goal stood and we went in
half-time down 2-4 to 0-5.

The second half was feisty affair, although at times the play did
deteriorate from both teams as the conditions took its toll. Lisgoold got
going again and to their credit got it back to two points with 11 minutes
to go 2-4 to 0-8. Killeagh though awoke form their slumber and got going
again to make 2-8 to 0-8 and with 4 minutes to go the killer goal came. A
beautiful cross-field ball landed into the corner-forwards path, who lashed
it home. That was that, they managed to scrape a fourth, although the final
score-line didn't justify Lisgoold’s commitment in the hour and considering
both sides drew earlier on in the year [back in June] in a thriller, the
score-line was a bit flattering for Killeagh. East Cork Board Chairman
Michael O’Brien presented the Cup to Killeagh, who we congratulate on a
fine win for them. It has been a good year; with the hurlers playing their
league final this weekend lest hope some silverware will get into our
cabinet before the year is out.
