Lisgoold News

18 November, 2009

It was a weekend in which we saw Newtown confirm their place in the Munster final with a 3 point win over Adare in Cork. These lads will surely fancy themsleves to win yet another Munster crown against Ballygunner of Waterford, a mouth-watering clash to look forward to. In other news, it was a case of hard-luck to the Irish soccer team on losing to France in their 1st leg of their playoff, it looks like a bridge too far for them, unfortunately this was the case for our minor footballers as they lost a thriller to Adrigole by 1 point in Kilmurry. And our Junior footballers are (finally) playing the division 2 league final on this Saturday at 2.30pm in Killeagh please support as they aim to end a very sucessful year on a high!!!!

Minor County C Football Quarter-Final

Lisgoold 3-14 (23)

Adrigole 4-12 (24)

As the scoreline suggests this was a thriller of a game, the two teams played to a standard of high quality which produced such fantastic scores for both sides. The wind was a factor in this game as our lads marched onto the kilmurry pitch with great confidence taken from their receent championship win againist Cobh. However this will be a game that even though all played well, will be one they left after them. A cross-wind was a factor in this match as it at times made it tough for both teams to play but still it was end to end stuff. John Cronin was leading the attack with great passion and flair as was alan conroy, the defence of rob smart, conor walsh and Cathal Cashman were getting stuck in as both temas went fighting tooth and nail. The period which you could argue decided the issue in came in the middle of the first half, where the men from the west scored 2-2 in matter of minutes this created daylight between the sides however our lads closed the gap and went in for the half-time jaffa 2-8 to 3-6 down.

The wind died down in the second half as both teams got going again at the restart, it continued to be a thriller as things got a bit phyiscal and to the annoyance of some supports of the blue and gold the referee seemed to be leaving some of the adrigole tackles off, which were a tad on the heavy side. But to be fair to the ref, he wasnt a deciding factor in the contest. the game continuted on with its fast pace and with 5 minutes to go were still a point down. We recieved two 21 yard frees late on but they were not taken and these turned to be curical as final whistle blew shortly afterwards. Our boys however, can be proud of what they have acheived after what was a busy year. But wait, they are not finished. They will have the county football (C Grade) and Hurling (B Grade) leagues still to playoff as well as they east cork minor hurling league final againist youghal still to come. So while this competition has slipped by us there is plenty still left to fight for.
