Cork Red FM League Semi-Final, Killeagh 3-13 Erins Own 1-16

Nearly a year after they started pre-season, the senior hurlers turned out in force last Wednesday night in Fermoy to take on Erin’s Own in the RedFM Senior Hurling League Semi Final. On a dry mild night, it was a lively game of hurling from both side. Erin’s Own opened the scoring after 30 secs but two good replies from Andy Walsh and Gary Leahy to make 2 pts to 1 after 4 minutes. Andy Walsh and Mikey Fitzgerald added further points before a goal from Daniel Walsh opened up a lead 1-4 to 0-3 in the 17th minute. The next score was sloppy from a Killeagh perspective as an Erin’s Own free from 50 yards landed in square and went through all the players in the large rectangle and a green flag was raised. Interchanging points from both sides including Killeagh’s Eoghan Keniry and Andy Walsh before the short whistle of Dave Farrell Jnr saw the scoreboard read Killeagh 1-6 Erin’s Own 1-6. Second half saw both teams tacking on scores including Eoghan Keniry, Andy Walsh, Shane Smiddy & Gary Leahy as at the end of the third quarter it was Killeagh leading 1-10 to 1-9. It was very close in the final quarter before two great goals from Gary Leahy who continued his recent good form from the U21’s. Some great defensive work from the Boys in Green including a fantastic save from Colin Walsh off a late penalty saw Killeagh hold out to take the victory on a score line of 3-13 to 1-16. On a night when the teams character and spirit was tested to a maximum, there were magnificent performances from Andrew Walsh, Brendan Barry, Kevin Murphy, Pat O’Brien, Kieran Lane, Gary Leahy and Brendan Delaney. The team awaits Sars in the Final of the RedFM Senior League in the next few weeks as a date is to be confirmed. Thanks to all supporters who travelled Wednesday night to cheer on the players and we are looking forward to a big crowd turning up for the final.
