County Minor B1 Hurling Final

Lisgoold 2-14 v 1-14 Newcestown

Our minor hurlers secured an historic first minor county title this month after repelling a very brave second-half Newcestown comeback in the County Minor B1 decider in Ballincollig on Sunday, Nov 13. Despite leading 2-07 to 0-05 at half-time, you got the sense that this game could go to the wire as the sides were very even from general play. In the end, Lisgoold’s superior conversion rate was the main difference between the sides. Newcestown started the game well with 2 points fired over in the opening 2 minutes. But Lisgoold soon responded with a flurry of points from Liam O’Shea and an inspiring score from dynamic wing-back Cathal Hickey and the sides were level on 5 minutes. Newcestown continued to win the lion’s share of possession, and deployed a sweeper to limit Liam O’Shea at full forward but their shooting was wayward from play and placed balls. In contrast, Lisgoold through LiamO converted frees to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The decisive period of the game came on 24 minutes. Declan O’Brien found LiamO, now operating at centre-forward, with an angled pass. Receiving the ball outside the 40 m line but with goal on his mind, LiamO took the defence on and beat 4 defenders before firing low into the bottom corner of the net off his left side. Lisgoold put pressure on the resultant puck-out and when Rob Williams gained possession, he bore down on goal with a similar finish to leave the scoreline 2-07 to 0-03. Jason Hegarty chipped in with another point, again after a direct run, before Newcestown responded with 2 points. On the restart to the 2nd half, Newcestown produced a remarkable turnaround and the scoreline was 2-12 to 1-11 on 21 minutes. However, LiamO continued to punish some poor Newcestown discipline and any placed ball from 90 m was within his range. Newcestown continued to push and into added time, the deficit was down to 2 points. Deep into added time, LiamO landed another fine score from the right wing. Newcestown pressed for a goal to bring the decider into extra-time. However, the uncompromising U16 half-back line of Cathal Hickey, Robbie Kinnane and Mark Hegarty were immense and behind them, Sean Whelan, Luke Walsh and James O’Driscoll managed to keep Newcestown at bay. On a final note, spare a thought for Cian Healy, one of the driving forces behind this team who suffered a cruciate ligament injury a few week ago. Cian was a rock at full back all year and contributed greatly to this team getting to the final.

Junior Hurling

Junior A Hurling League County Final.

Lisgoold 0-10 v 2-22 Cloughduv.

Our junior hurlers ended the season last Sunday on a disappointing note after being well beaten by Cloughduv in the County League Final. Cloughduv had a lot of pace in the side and a great spread of scorers. A goal on 8 minutes established a gap that Lisgoold never closed. Despite this, Lisgoold was well in the game at half-time at 0-05 v 1-09. However, Cloughduv were completely dominant in the 2nd half and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Team: J. Murphy, P. O’Mahony, B. Clifford, C. Scannell, B. Flynn, J. Cronin, A. O’Donovan, Caoimhan O’Shea, P. Leahy, K. Cashman C.Cashman (0-6, 0-3 frees), M. O’Connell, L. O’Shea (0-3, 0-1 sideline), D.
