Lisgoold News

12 November, 2009

November has arrived and its time for the rewards and the titles to be handed out for the past year. Last Friday night saw Lisgoold juveniles hold their annual social (in conjunction with the ladies football club) in the Midleton park hotel. Our Under 10 and Under 12 teams were honored for their achievements as well as the vibrant ladies footballers. We had the honour of the Brendan Martin cup (all-Ireland senior ladies title) on show as Angela Walsh from Inch Rovers was at present to had out the medals. A fantastic night was had by all, as they danced the night away to the early morning, the junior club held its first annual run over the weekend, which was deemed to be a success which a strong show on Sunday morning. Our Minors have their county adventure in football to begin. And one must note that they are also involved in the Minor B Hurling League championship as well, so it may be 2010 till their season is complete!!!!! In other news, last Monday saw 81 million Germans celebrate the falling of the Berlin wall, a historic moment in the 20thcentury and not to be forgotten by those who witnessed it. While that was happening, there was a historic moment for our own GAA club, as for the 7thtime of trying, Lisgoold finally triumphed in an U-21 final.

Under 21 CHC Final

Lisgoold 1-15 (18)

Cobh 1-10 (13)

It seemed that this was going to be another 'if only' days for our Under 21 team. From losing 2 finals in the 70's, 1 in the 80's and 3 this decade it seemed we would never achieve a title. This changed though last Sunday, as our under 21 hurlers finally captured an Under 21 title. (fittingly in paric liosgcul). Lisgoold played with a lot of hunger and determination to land this title although it must be said the huge following, being at home turf and the fact there was much better organization than the footballing fiasco a few weeks ago did give them the slight edge. A rip-roaring contest ensued as our lads got stuck in from the off. Powered by good defending from Killian and Peter and superb attack from John Cronin and Rob saw Cobh being outsmarted (excuse the pun) by 5 points. The first half was a tough affair with neither side giving an inch, John Cronin roared lisgoold on with the first two points. Ten minutes in we saw Ciarán saving an 21 yard free, followed by a superb save straight afterwards, which led a marker for the others to follow. The curcial score came Rob 20 minutes in, as a fantastic solo effort led to a green flag this was a great boost as our boys trooped off for half-time 1-9 to 0-6 ahead.

The second half was another hard fought affair, with both sides giving it everything. Some great play by Killian Kingston, Alan Conroy and Conor Walsh ensured Lisgoold kept Cobh at bay. Some great scores were taken in the second half as our boys battled their way to victory as time was ticking away the situation was looking bleak for Cobh, but they surged back as Lisgoold lost a bit of leeway and it looked like the match was slipping away from them. However with the experience and know-how of our goalie Ciarán, and the attacking skills of johnsey and rob made sure this was going to be Lisgoold's day. Mass celebrations and relief at the final whistle as an Under 21 title was finally won by the club. Fittingly our Chairman John Joe Regan (also a member of the GPC in the East Cork Board) was at hand to present the Cup to Ciarán Cronin, who has the great honour of being the first winning Under 21 captain in the Club - well done lads.

Team:Ciarán Cronin (Capt.), Keith Flynn, Killian Kingston, Ronan Stack, Alan Conroy, Peter Leahy, Conor Walsh, Jamie Woods, John Cronin, Rob Smart, Micheál Cronin.

Scorers: Rob Smart 1-7, J Cronin 0-5, Micheál Cronin, Jamie Woods, Conor Walsh 0-1 each

Subs (All Used):Colin Smart, Oisin Curtin, William Madigan, and John Harrison.

Man of the Match:Ciarán Cronin - could have been easily given to Rob who was top scorer but Ciarán's close range saves, when the pressure was on, and his inspiration and leadership was enough to swing it in his favour.

Referee:Mary Byrne Swane - Fr.O'Neills. Could have been a very fiesty encounter, however Mary kept her cool, when hard decisions needed to be made - did well.
