Castlelyons GAA Weekly Notes week ended 24th July 2017

Great win for Junior Hurlers in Championship.

Castlelyons 6-18 Ballinacurra 1-10

Our Junior B hurlers advanced to the next round of the Championship with a comprehensive victory over Ballinacurra at Caherlag on Sunday evening. We were on top from the start in this game and led 4-10 to 0-5 at half time. We were strengthened by Cian O Leary and Declan Sexton who made the journey from Dublin for the game and both done very well. Cian had the better of the battle with Ballinacurra’s best player and quality hurler Jake Hegarty as he held him to just two points from play but then Jake cannot drive the whole team. These days Ballinacurra are finding it tough going even fielding teams and credit to them as even referee Joe Coppinger raced from his stewarding at the big game in Páirc Uí Chaoimh to make up numbers for them.

All our lads played very well and the highlights were a strong display again by Mike Hegarty and Dunny unerring from frees. There will be tougher tests going forward but credit to James Maye, Donal Barry and their management outfit for a lot of good work with our second hurling team which is so important.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Padraig Murphy, Liam Moroney, Mark Murphy, Declan Sexton, Cian O Leary, Noel McAuliffe, Brian O Donovan, Colm O Neill, Mike Hegarty, Ronan Fenton, Alan O Regan, Chris cotter, Shane Moroney, Ml John Dorgan. Subs: - A O Neill, M Spillane, F Waters, R Walsh and S Moroney.

Castlelyons Players in action with Imokilly.

It was a sight to behold at Castlemartyr on Monday evening as Imokilly played the Cork Minor hurlers in a challenge game. A glorious evening and the place full of spectators with the young hurlers of tomorrow spilling out onto the second pitch displaying their skills with

Cork and other county and club jerseys. The game itself was highly competitive and this Cork minor team will take some beating as they dealt with the Imokilly challenge well and matched the physicality of their opponents. Both sides were missing some regulars and our own Barry Murphy did not line out with the Minors. The game ended in a win for the county minors on a score of 0-23 to 1-17.

Well done to Castlelyons men Colm Barry, Niall O Leary, Aidan O Sullivan and Tommy Carroll who all got game time and will all be challenging for a place in the Imokilly team for the next round of the senior championship.

Winners of the Uí Mac Coille Grand Club Draw.

The winners of the Uí Mac Coille Grand Club Draw were as follows: - 1st Prize - Michael O Brien, 2nd Prize - Aghada, Orla Ronan, Rahan, Mallow and Third Prize – John Dunne, Lady’s Bridge. This draw was a great success with good money accruing to the clubs and well supported by Castlelyons.

Reopening of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Well folks the big day came on Saturday as the new Stadium in the real capital opened for a big championship game. Of course, there was a trial run on Wednesday evening with 10,000 for a PIHC game but the place was gleaming for Saturday. The crowds poured in with little or no complaint. There is nothing to bate a Munster championship and the first real roar in the new stadium was shattering as Aaron Cunningham banged in the second of the Banner goals. For Clare on Saturday, it was not to be as Tipperary took the spoils. However, Cork GAA are surely on a winner with all their teams going well and the very sight of the Park once again an inspiration to the youth to drive on with the camán or the peil. Well done to John Drislane and Patsy Collins who gave a great contribution in stewarding over the days.
