11 July, 2017

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 10th July 2017

Congratulations to Minor and Senior Heroes’ Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy.

Cork for Croker on the Double.

Well there is a saying that “if you stick around long enough they will have to say something nice about you” and surely this could refer to Cork as I can recall recent winter wonderlands of massive media hype about the crisis in Cork hurling. There was roaring and shouting and writing as Christy Moore could nearly make up a song. Come July 2017 Cork are now the new U17 Munster champions not to talk of the new minor and senior hurling champions of Munster last Sunday. A mighty year to date as we forgive red faces with Cork are rocking towards the All Irelands in all three grades. Congratulations to Chairman Ger Lane, all his Executive, the astute management outfits and especially, the three panels who are delighting the fans with quality hurling. Add in the opening one of the top stadiums in Europe shortly and located on the Banks. She is already booked out for the first of the 2018 Concerts next May and ready to go for the All-Ireland hurling quarter finals shortly. Bate that in two throws. More to do but the Rebels are back.

Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy write their way into the history of Castlelyons GAA.

Colm Spillane gave another outstanding display of defending as he attacked the ball and delivered controlled clearances in the senior hurling final versus Clare in Thurles las Sunday. Colm who overcame serious injury to make his way back onto the Cork line up has really helped tighten up the backline. This writer believes that his colleagues McDonnell and Cahalane are really benefitting from Colm in there as he shows fair strength, power and vision. Congratulations again Colm and to all the lads and best of luck in the All-Ireland series.

Congratulations to our star minor Barry Murphy as he came on at half time in the minor game, rattled the net for a settling goal, scored a great point and done very well as Cork minor hurlers crushed Clare on their way to the All-Ireland Semi Final. Congrats to Barry, our neighbours the Roche twins from the Rovers and to all the minors and management outfit.

Overall, a historic day for our Club in Thurles as it is the first day we had club members playing in both grades and being part of the double. Castlelyons Abú.

Junior B Hurling League - Castlelyons 0-15 Cloyne 2-10.

We played Cloyne away last Friday evening in the Mossie O Sullivan Division 2 East Cork hurling league and lost by just a single point on the score of 2-10 to 0-15. By all accounts this was a good game but it is regretted that there is no report as the PRO could not attend on the night and there is no data available from the management. However, we have slipped down the way now in the league as the Rovers head up the show with 12 points and unbeaten, Cloyne have moved second on 8 points and Sarsfields third on 6 pts whereas we are fourth on 4 pts. However, we are going well in the championship with a strong win over Youghal. This should put us in a good place for our next outing against Ballinacurra on Sunday evening the 23rd July timed for 5.30 pm presently for this game.
