Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 3.3.17

Castlelyons defeat Youghal in East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship.

Castlelyons 2-11 Youghal 0-13

We headed for sun drenched Lisgoold last Friday evening with a handy Junior B team that had won some league games and played some challenges. This level of preparation really helps as the lads recorded a very convincing four-point win over Youghal’s second team, their first one being a senior outfit.

After ten minutes, we were 1-3 to 0-2 ahead with Brian O Donovan, Alan O Regan and Chris Cotter scoring 0-1 apiece and Chris Cotter finished a high ball to the net. While Ryan Cody and Johnathan Ormonde had 0-1 each for Youghal. We were playing with the breeze, a strong sun to our backs and, of course, down towards the Village. We continued to hurl well as Alan O Regan was fouled and Brian O Donovan pointed. Then Ronan O Regan got a great point from outfield and Brian O Donovan closed out the scoring for the first half with a point from a free. Meanwhile, Ormonde, Cody, Walsh and Kelly added points for Youghal to leave it just 1-6 to 0-6 at half time. This left us under pressure for the second half as we now had to hurl against the wind, sun and that that tough pull up towards the Top Cross goals.

Referee Paudie Kearney threw in for the second half and Youghal applied a lot of pressure for a while but there only return was 0-1 from a free by Ormonde as all our back were resolute and we began to come into the game again as Shane Moroney and Ronan Fenton were winning a lot of ball in the forwards. Dunny was wide from a far out free for us but Alan O Regan took a good pass from Shane Moroney and planted a good point for us. Moroney again set up Ronan Fenton for another 0-1. Then with ten minutes gone in the second half Mike Hegarty came onto a broken ball and struck a mighty ground shot to the net from 14 yards out to give us a 2-8 to 0-8 lead. Our middle third of Shane Fenton, Colm O Neill, Noel McAuliffe, Dunny and Ronan O Regan really imposed themselves in the game now and we needed it as Youghal attacked strong in the middle ten of the second half. A feature of the game was the steady display of our goalie, JP Murphy, with long puckouts when needed and accurate as necessary. Youghal put over 0-4 in this time from Ormonde 0-2, McSweeney 0-1 and Kelly 0-1 to leave it 2-8 to 0-12 with ten minutes left on the clock.

Mark Spillane came on for M J Dorgan in the forwards who had got through an amount of work and Cian O Leary for Padraig Murphy who had work hard in the backs. Spillane then set up Dunny for a vital 0-1 but Youghal’s McSweeney replied with 0-1. Then Spillane again parted to Chris Cotter who laid on a beauty for Moroney and he obliged with 0-1. There was some fierce pressure by Youghal but great defending inside and indeed all through particularly by full back Liam Moroney, Mark Murphy and the lads. Unlike last week we showed a steely resolve of ‘never say die’ and Dunny closed out the game for us with 0-1

from a glorious free sending us into the next round against Ballinacurra by a score of 2-11 to 0-13. Well done to the lads and the management team.

Congratulations to Barry Murphy

Well what a week in hurling and this time it was the Cork minors as they took on Tipperary in Thurles last Thursday evening. A huge crowd of 4, 200 turned up as Cork are coming back these days. This was one of the finest games ever witnessed possibly in any grade with the team’s level at half time, full time, half time in extra time and full time and drained in the end as it ended in a draw. Our own Barry Murphy played his part during the second half of the game as the panel were rotated to keep the tempo going.

Then back to Páirc Uí Rinn on Monday evening and despite the cost and disappointment of the football the day before 8,142 packed in for the biggest minor attendance ever in Cork to witness yet again a massive game of hurling. It was equally exciting with fans revelling in the quality of Cork’s hurling as they roared to an 11-point lead but then Tipp pulled it back to just one point but this time Cork motored on for another 0-2 and took the spoils. Again, great to see Barry Murphy feature in this memorable game. Congratulations to the management especially Denis Ring and all the lads especially Uí Mac Coille men, Aaron Walsh Barry, Carrigtwohill, Sean O Leary Hayes, Midleton, Liam O Shea Lisgoold and, of course, the Roche twins Eoin and Brian from Bride Rovers. They now go back to Thurles on Sunday with zest to lower the Banner for a first win in nine years in the minor grade and the best of luck to all.

Next Stop for Colm Spillane – Munster Senior Hurling Final.

Well it is fast becoming a season of Sunday’s for Cork with massive victories over Tipperary and Waterford already as they head for the Munster Senior Hurling Final in Thurles on Sunday against the men from Clare. Undoubtedly, Cork are strong favourites as Clare had just the one game against Limerick while for victory in that one and thy say that Clare never beat Cork in a Munster Final. There will be some crowd given that Cork are in both minor and senior games. Anyway, our own club will be well represented by Colm Spillane who has done well in all games to date and we wish him the very best of luck on Sunday.
