Junior Round Up.

The East Cork first round tie versus St. Catherine’s was postponed to Sunday 16th July. The lads played Kilbree last Sat, narrowly losing out on a scoreline of 2-17 v 5-07.

Munster Minor Hurling

Congratulations to Liam O’Shea who played a big part in the Cork minor hurling team’s semi-final victory over Tipperary. After last week’s encounter in Thurles which ended all square in extra-time, Cork made a number of changes including a more advance role for Liam. He made a major contribution in a two man full forward line, setting up Cork’s first goal with an angled 20 yard pass before scoring Cork’s 2nd goal after latching on to a breaking ball, and a neat finish into the corner. He could have had another goal soon after, in similar circumstances, but shot narrowly wide on this occasion. Cork now play Clare in both minor and senior codes next Sunday.

Dan Joe McCarthy U10 Hurling Tournament.

On July 1, the club hosted an U10 tournament in honour of, the late Dan Joe McCarthy. Dan Joe was a true club stalwart who first started playing hurling in Midleton Christian Brothers secondary school where he developed a life-long love and passion for the game of hurling. He was captain of the first Lisgoold team to win a hurling championship when Lisgoold won the East Cork B hurling title in 1952. Dan Joe was a former chairman of the club and was club president until the day he passed away. He was the club juvenile representative up until his 80s. He was involved with various teams throughout the years also, passing on his passion and knowledge to many young players during that time. Dan Joe was also a member of the Order of Malta and was present at matches all over East Cork, either on duty or attending as a supporter. He had a great love of Cork hurling and went everywhere to follow them. He often cycled to Thurles to a Munster championship match. He attended his first All-Ireland in 1945 and did not miss any hurling All Ireland until 1998. Teams from Fingallian’s (Dublin), Blackrock (Co. Limerick) and Kilmacow (Kilkenny) took part in this tournament. The first game of the tournament pitted our lads against Kilmacow. This was a tight affair and a sign of things to come as there was very little between all 4 teams involved throughout the day, with the Lisgoold boys narrowly winning. Next up was Blackrock and again, Lisgoold won out a close match, before narrowly losing the final round robin match to Fingallians. This set up 2 finals, for a shield and plate. Our lads played Kilmacow in the shield final, but unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the scoreline was reversed. Fittingly Fingallians beat Blackrock in the plate final and Dan Joe’s son Eoin was presented with the plate by Breda McCarthy. The following boys represented Lisgoold: Colm Garde, Alan O’Keefe, Cillian McSweeney, Oisin Roche, Adam Byrne, Daniel Nyhan, Eoin Woulfe, Denis O’Leary, Conor Horgan, Daragh McMahon, Jacob Coleman, Conor Holden, Daniel Hallahan and Dean Murphy.
