Lisgoold News

04 November, 2009

125 years have past andwere well celebrated in Thurles last weekend, some excellent shows and events were hosted by the GAA and TG4. We were also treated to a thriller in where Newtown, scraped past Thurles Sarsfields by 1 point. The game demonstrated all that’s good in the association, so roll on the next 125 years!!!! It was a historic week for the club, as Connery’s Cubs emerged victorious against Cobh last Thursday night in Carrigtwohill, the club’s first minor championship double. The club will be hosting its first annual 5k Road Race, which will take place on the 8th of November at 10am (This Sunday), an event that is not to be missed. The juvenile social is on this Friday night no doubt it will be a night of great celebration for this vibrant club, who are also holding their annual church gate collection so please support. Around the county, we saw Fermoy causing a minor shock by beating Cloughduv in the JAHC final, Duhallow prevailed in a thriller in the U21 Quarter-final Replay against Inniscarra, and will proceed to take on Glen Rovers in the semi-final. In Football we saw Ballygarvan squeezed past St.Mary’s in the JAFC Semi-final, to set-up a final clash with Glanworth and in Camogie the St.Catherines bandwagon was put to a halt in the Munster final against Cashel. The Tipp ladies powered their way to a 20 point win, but to be fair to the saints they were missing a few, and Cashel’s experience came to the fore. It was a great year for the Ballynoe ladies; at least they start the next decade as County Champions.

MCFC Final Replay Oct 29th

Lisgoold 4-11 (23)

Cobh 3-8 (17)

Fortunately for us, our minors managed to win in a thrilling Minor Football final [which doubled as the league final]. From the first whistle to last, this game had everything. It was a thrill-a-minute a game as both sides went tooth and nail in terrible conditions. We got off to a flyer as we raced into 1-2 to 0-0 lead. John Cronin and Alan Conroy got Lisgoold going with some splendid scores and when John McCarthy got a lovely second goal it looked like we would walk a way with it. But disaster struck in the 19th minute when Alan O'Flynn got a goal for Cobh it was a body blow to our lads, but to be fair they bounced back from this setback and managed to keep the gap somewhat. Goal chances were spurred but we surely would have raised one or two green flags if it wasn't for the heroics of the Cobh goalie - Edward Walsh. As the short-whistle was blown the score read 2-6 to 1-6 in favour of Lisgoold.

The second half was another free-flowing affair, with both sides giving it everything. Some great play by Killian Kingston, Rob Smart, Martin Conroy (whose booming kick outs were a great help), and John Cronin ensured Lisgoold kept Cobh at bay. Some great scores were taken in the second half as our boys battled their way to victory as the rain teamed down; the situation was looking bleak for Cobh as the match was slipping away from them. A great move in the 48th minute led to a penalty which was duly dispatch by Alan. This seemed to have broken Cobh who began to realize it wasn’t going to be their day. Our lads rode out the remaining minutes, and took this Championship [and league title] back to the parish of Lisgoold. A fantastic achievement for this special group of players. With a backroom staff of Noel Connery, Eoghan Heagrty and the experience of Kevin O’Shea, this group ensured this year would be a very successful one for the minors. East Cork Board Chairman Michael O’Brien presented the shield to John Cronin, who will now lead his team to the county championship and county league competitions which will be played-off shortly.

Team: M Conroy, R Smart, C Cashman, R Stack, C Walsh, K Flynn, A Conroy, J Woods, J McCarthy, J Cashman, J Cronin, K Kingston.

Man of the Match: John McCarthy – a very industrial performance by john, which was pleasing to the eye to the majority of the supporters.

Referee: Denis O’Flynn - Fr.O’Neills. Conditions were awful, but Denis sensibly handled the game in a way which was enjoyable for everyone.
