Senior Hurling League v Newcestown in Newcestown on Sunday 26th March
Carrigtwohill 1-12 Newcestown 0-13
Carrig’s senior hurlers registered their first victory of the League campaign with a hugely spirited second half performance against Newcestown last Sunday. In many respects the game was dominated by a gale force wind that blew down towards the club house with both teams landing scores from prodigious distances. Carrig had the assistance of the wind in the first half and led by 0-9 to 0-5 at half time with scores from Tomas Hogan, Darren O’Driscoll, Shane Healy and Padraic Hogan but it didn’t look as if four points would be sufficient against the elements in the second half.
However, the intensity and intelligence of Carrig’s performance in the second half was terrific. They moved the ball well from defence and Carrig’s workul rate without the ball was hugely impressive. A goal from Tomas Hogan early in the second half gave Carrig a cushion and further scores from Cathal O’Sullivan, Sean Rohan and ODriscoll kept Carrig in front and with five minutes of normal time remaining their half time lead of four points still held. With Sean Dempsey making a big contribution as a second half substitute and Ronan Power performing excellently as a sweeper in the second half Carrig held on for a very encouraging victory.
Carrig: Shane Devlin, Aaron Gosnell, Padraic Hogan, Conor O’Mahony, Jay Horgan, Ronan Power, Colm O’Connell, Liam O’Sullivan, Cathal O’Sullivan, Seamus Roche, Tomas Hogan, Daire Crotty, Shane Healy, Darren O’Driscoll, Sean Rohan.
Sub used: Sean Dempsey.
Junior A Football Championship v Midleton in Carrigtwohill on Thursday, April 6th
Carrigtwohill 0-11 Midleton 3-12
Carrig’s interest in this year’s Junior A football championship ended on a warm Thursday night under lights in the village. Carrig finished the wrong side of a hard-fought game that saw Midleton take their goal chances at opportune times, always keeping Carrig at arm’s length.
Liam O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Carrig on 5 minutes with a point but Midleton responded immediately with a goal down the other end, setting the pattern for the evening. Nevertheless, Carrig rattled off the next two points to draw level, with Colin Santry and Shane Healy striking from distance. Midleton then reeled off 4 points on the trot before Carrig pulled another back. Midleton answered once again before captain, Seamus Roche, pointed to send Carrig into half time a goal down, 0-5 to 1-5.
Midleton started the 2nd half much stronger scoring 1-3 within 15 minutes of the restart with Carrig scoring one point in reply. Carrig’s heads never dropped however and they went on to score 5 of the next 6 points through Liam O’Sullivan, Sean Rohan, Neil O’Connor and a brace from Eoghan
O’Mahony, to leave them within 4, 0-11 to 2-9. Sean Dempsey was outstanding in midfield, winning a number of marks and creating havoc going forward. Colin Santry and Eoghan O’Mahony showed well in the forward line but the crucial goal never came. Just as Carrig were picking up steam, Midleton scored a penalty, for which Jay Horgan was black carded, with 5 minutes to go to kill off momentum. They also added 3 points to their tally as Carrig pushed for goals at the other end.
