Russell Rovers G.A.A.

Russell Rovers 1-12 Aghada 1-9

Last Sunday afternoon we completed our JFL (Div 2) programme with a hard-earned win over near neighbours Aghada, played in ideal weather conditions in Shanagarry.

Unfortunately, as this was only our second league win we are in danger of facing relegation to Division 3, though it must be noted that we were in the company of three Junior A teams in Division 2 so two wins out of five is not by any means a bad league campaign under the management of Mike Mannion, Tommy Whelehan and Seamus Kearney.

Both sides lined out without several first choice players and, as a result, the quality of football served up was not what it might have been. Rovers opened the scoring with a well-executed point from Brian Hartnett in the opening seconds, followed by another tasty point by Luke Murray a minute later. It was tit-for-tat for much of the half with never more than two points separating the sides. Luke added another point in the 12th minute and Kieran Walsh finished the half with two well-taken white flags to leave Rovers trailing 0-6 to 0-5 at the break. We did create a couple of good goal-scoring chances earlier on but the Aghada keeper did well to keep his net intact on each occasion.

Aghada caught our defence napping on the resumption of play with an early goal followed by a point and despite a point from play by Ian Smiddy and a pointed free by Brian Hartnett, we struggled for much of this half. That is, until Hartnett collected possession out on the right wing and soloed through the Aghada defence to plant the ball neatly in the back of the net for a class goal. This score seemed to inject new life into the team and we finished the game strongly with a series of nice points from Luke Murray, Brian Hartnett (0-2), Paul Lane and Kieran Walsh. Young Dan Ruddy in goal continued his excellent league form with a couple of outstanding saves to keep us in the game which was well refereed by Pa Beausang, Midleton.

Team: Dan Ruddy; Aidan Beausang, David Whelehan, Joe O’Flynn; Daniel O’Brien, Ian Smiddy (0-1), James Kennefick; Paul Lane (0-1), Luke Murray (0-3), Brian Whelehan, Kieran Walsh (0-3), Kevin Ivers; Eoghan Cronin, Brian Hartnett (1-4), Sean Gilsenan.

Subs were a bit thin on the ground for this game but Seamus Kearney said he was on stand-by if required!
