Healthy Clubs Update

Healthy Walk No. 6: Beach Walk Healthy Clubs Project – Final Event of 2016 a great success

Congratulations to the 25 happy and healthy walkers, from those aged 6 to some in their second half-century, who walked in Killeagh Healthy Clubs Project Monthly Walk No. 6 from Claycastle to Pilmore and back on Sunday morning last. The beautiful 6 mile walk along the beach began in thick fog, which gradually receded as the sun took control as morning turned to day. It was a privilege for all those present to meet with 94-year old Jim Griffin, President of St. Ita's GAA, in Pilmore. Jim gave his unique insight into the changing landscape and history of the coastline, where he has lived since his birth during the Civil War of 1922. His reflections on the changes to our country, our lifestyles and our geography were most interesting. As this is most likely to be our final event of 2016, we would like to thank everyone who has got involved in one or some of the variety of activities and events run by the Healthy Clubs Project team in 2016, and hope that we will continue to get support from those in each of our clubs and those in our community as we embark on many more events and activities for 2017.

Scór na nÓg – Third Place for Killeagh team in County Final

What is the smallest county in Northern Ireland?

Which TD had the most votes in the General Election of 2016?

In what year did Ireland join the EEC?

Who was Kerry’s only Football All-Star in 2016?

These were just four of the 80 challenging questions asked of the Under 17 participants in the County Final of the Tráth na gCeist (Quiz) for Scór na nÓg, which was held in Cumann Baile an Easpaig (Bishopstown GAA) on Friday evening last. Thirteen teams entered – Killeagh were represented by Barry Motherway, Dylan Hogan, Adrian Galvin and Dara Motherway. After the conclusion of the ten rounds, Boherbue were declared winners with a score of 68, with Tadhg MacCarthaighs in second place with 65 points. Third place for Killeagh, with 63 points, just 5 behind the winners, was a creditable result. Well

done boys, Imokilly champions and third in the county. Best wishes to Boherbue in the All-Ireland Final in Belfast in February.

Dates For The Diary

Monday December 26th Poc Fada – Our annual Poc Fada takes place on Monday December 26th, from 11.00 a.m. in Mount Uniacke. First out will be our Under 14 players – teams of three, with one adult required to walk with each team. Minors and adult teams will follow, with prizes in many categories. Having failed to hold our Poc Fada due to the atrocious weather conditions of 2015, hopefully the anticipation will have doubled for this year’s event. All are welcome – male and female, young and old, seasoned hurlers and novices, along with those retired hurlers who can test their skills one more time! Nothing beats being there! We will also incorporate the day’s outing into our Walk No.7 as part of our Healthy Club Project for those who might like a brisk walk but might not be interested in participating in the Poc Fada.

Thursday December 29th Table Quiz – Our annual Table Quiz for adults in aid of Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile Club takes place in The Old Thatch, Killeagh, on Thursday December 29th at 8.30 p.m. Book your table now with Ursula, 087-6292646, our newly elected Chairperson, or Olivia, 087-4111549, our new Secretary. Tables of 4 for €40, great night guaranteed!
