Healthy Clubs Update

Successful Cork Forum in St. Finbarr’s GAA and walk in Glenbower

Congratulations to the Cork County Board’s Health and Wellbeing Committee and in particular its rúnaí Janas Harrington for its excellent organisation of the annual Healthy Clubs Forum in St. Finbarr’s GAA Club on Saturday last. Killeagh’s Healthy Clubs Project was well represented at the forum with six delegates, including guest speaker Tracey Kennedy who spoke movingly and honestly about personal health challenges she has faced in the last eighteen months. Conor Cusack from Cloyne gave a passionate talk about emotional well-being. It was a major honour for the committee to have GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghaíl attend to give the opening address at the Forum. Representatives from each of Cork’s four Healthy Clubs (Midleton, St. Finbarr’s, Castlehaven and Killeagh) spoke about their respective journeys with the Healthy Clubs Project, while Majella Canty of the Samaritans also gave an outstanding presentation on the important work done by Samaritan volunteers throughout our country. The importance of the event was underlined by the presence of the County Board Chairman Ger Lane, Secretary Frank Murphy, Treasurer Pearse Murphy and other County Board and Munster Council officers, while Aoife O’Brien represented the GAA’s National Health and Wellbeing Committee. Aoife gave all present a very clear overview of the national impact of the Healthy Clubs Project, highlighting that the project was honoured last Thursday evening with an award for Corporate Social Responsibility at the Sports Industry Awards.

Less than 24 hours after the Healthy Clubs Forum, our own Healthy Clubs Project was out and about again, this time with our fifth monthly Hill Walk in beautiful Glenbower. Well done to all who came out early on a magical Sunday morning to appreciate the wonders of our local treasure, and many thanks to our walk leader James O’Mahony.

U8’s at The Barrs

Killeagh under 8's travelled to Togher on Saturday 12th November to play St. Finbarr's. We had twenty players available on the day. We had three teams, each of whom played three matches (2 hurling and 1 football) on the fabulous AstroTurf pitches. Each of the lads performed very well on the day. It was great to see the continuing improvement in the skill levels. There were some super passages of play and great teamwork was to the fore throughout. The panel of players who travelled on the day was as follows:
Alex Fogarty, Alex Howey, Andrew Brenner, Ben Geary, Billy Guerin, Callum Power, Cathal Brennan, Cayden Hyde, Cormac Deane, Cormac Delaney, Daniel Geary, Darragh Sheehan, Diarmuid Fitzpatrick, John Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Rian Lane, Rian O'Connor, Ryan Murphy, Senan McDonnell, Tom Power. After the games the lads were taken to the Mardyke Arena for some bowling, table tennis and food. Everyone had a great day out, even if the bowling skills need to be sharpened (particularly by the management!). We would like to thank their mentors and other drivers on the day for organising and transporting the lads on Saturday last….Well Done All.

U15s finish off the year one point short

Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 15 Hurling League Final Ballincollig 0-13, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-6

Our final game of the year for all our Juvenile teams saw our Under 15 hurlers travel to Ballincollig to play Ballincollig in the Premier 2 League Final. A close-fought game saw us trail by six points to three at half time, but Ben O’Connor’s introduction at the break paid immediate dividends as he goaled within 30 seconds of the restart. A second goal from Ben from a free on 46 minutes gave us a 2-5 to 0-9 lead, but Ballincollig finished the stronger, and despite excellent performances from our defence and our cúl báire Ciaran O’Rourke, we trailed by one at the final whistle, thereby giving Ballincollig victory. Many thanks to our hosts Ballincollig for the fine spread of food provided for our team and supporters following the game – it was greatly appreciated.

Team: Ciaran O’Rourke Danny Cunningham, Daniel Lucey (C), Paul Delaney, Robert Sinclair, Richie Landers, Owen Cosgrove, David Kelly, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Olan Broderick, Ryan McCarthy, Oisin McCarthy, Darragh O’Connor, Dara Motherway, Christian Coughlan. Subs: Ben O’Connor, Ciaran Leahy, Tommy Noonan, Aaron O’Connell.
