Lisgoold News

21 October, 2009

We were plunged into mourning over the weekend as our esteemed club President Michael O'Sullivan [Or more affectionally known as Bob] passed away. Bob was such a passionate man for the club, the community and especially his family that his loss will have affect us all. A fantastic person who gave so much and as asked for very little. He will be sorely missed and all in C.L.G. Liosgcúl turned up in their droves last Saturday to show the respect we had for him. Our deepest sympathy and our condolences go out to his wife Kitty and Family. A special tribute to Bob will be included in next’s weeks issue... Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hAnam dhílis.

In other news, our under 21's crashed out of the championship Sunday morning, the minors had their final called off due to the passing of the Uachtarán - it will be fixed at a later date and our juniors are still in the dark over their league finals, we hope these can be sorted out in time. Also we must give our congratulations to the St.Catherines senior Camogie team who are this year’s Senior A Camogie Champions after beating Milford by 1-12 to 0-12 in Páirc Uí Rinn to win their first title. A historic achievement for the ladies from the parishes of Ballynoe and Conna. It was their fourth county title this decade as they won the Junior B title in 2000, Junior A in 2003 and Senior B in 2006. Now in 2009 they won the Senior A – so a step by step approach seemed the way to go for the saints who have achieved the ultimate in cork club camogie... All in C.L.G. Liosgcúl would like to say well done and best of luck in the upcoming Munster championship. Well done ladies.

Under 21 Football Semi-Final October 18th

Lisgoold 1-4 (7)

Glanmire 1-11(14)

Our under 21's crashed out of the championship after brave performance against a youthful Glanmire side. A minute’s silence was observed in respect of the passing of Bob. However we were ‘down’ quite literally from the start of the match, as we had to play with 10 players, and this wouldn’t have helped our lads especially at 12-a-side, as space was aplenty. Our lads bravely battled and against the odds were level with Glanmire until the 18th minute when they began to pull ahead. Anthony McCarthy had a stormer in goals as did John Cronin and Peter Leahy. Colin Smart was rolling back the years with a battling display and his brother Rob who was Lisgoold's best player - was superb. We went into half-time 1-6 to 0-2 down. Two more players arrived just before half time and so were able to proceed with the game. In fairness it was game on after a belter of a goal from John Cronin left it at 1-7 to 1-4. Now what looked like an impossible task seemed achievable. However Glanmire, pulled away in the last 10 minutes and that was that. Huge disappointment and annoyance in this writers’ point of view considering the lack of organization and approach to the Under 21 squad from the management. One would wonder is there much point in putting out an Under 21 team after this shambles. However, we can all be proud of the effort the players had put in, as they nearly pulled off what would have been an astonishing win. They have the hurling final against Cobh left to play, let’s hope we will be better prepared this time.

Team: Anthony McCarthy, Rob Smart, William Madigan, Keith Flynn, Conor Walsh, Peter Leahy, Alan Conroy, John Cronin, Ciarán Cronin(Capt), Killian Kingston, Colin Smart, John Harrison.

Scorers: John Cronin 1-2 (0-1 frees), Alan Conroy, Ciarán Cronin 0-1 each.

Réiteoir: Mike Walsh (St.Catherines) Very little to do, but did very well.

New Arrival

A new arrival to the O'Shea clan has come as Kieran O'Shea one of the players on the panel and his wife Maureen gave birth to a baby girl whom they have named Maeve. All in C.LG Liosgcul would like to wish Kieran, Maureen and Maeve Best wishes in the future...
