Cloyne GAA Notes

Lotto;

We had no winner of last week’s Lotto draw for a €2,400 jackpot or no winner of the €1000 prize for matching 3 numbers plus the bonus.

The winning numbers drawn were 10,16,21,27 bonus 20.

Congratulations to Rebecca O’Shea c/o Donal O’Shea who was the only match 3 winner and wins €150.

Next week’s draw for a €2,600 jackpot will take place in the Tower bar with tickets costing €2 available from all local outlets and committee members.

Premier Intermediate Hurling;

It’s often said that the worst game to lose is the semi-final, so close and yet so far and all that, so maybe that’s the reason the game v Fermoy won’t be remembered long in the memory banks.

Both teams are no doubt grateful for the second chance and with both radars re calibrated we can expect a much improved display in the replay.

Scores were very hard to come by and the busiest people at the ground were the 4 umpires with approx 30 wides served up between the two teams.

Fermoy were first onto the scoreboard with a point from play and Ian Cahill replied with a like score after 5 minutes. A Dillon Cahill free put us ahead but this was cancelled out by a free from Fermoy.

Defences were on top at this stage no more so than centre back Morry Lynch who was hurling a lot of ball and it was from an astute pass of his to Dillon that put our noses in front once again.Fermoy replied with two points one from a free and another from play when a goal seemed on to go ahead once again.Diarmuid O’Sullivan struck a long range point from play to level it up again which was again cancelled out by a Fermoy point from a tight angle.

The last act of the half was a Dillon pointed free following a foul on Ian to leave us all square at the break 5 points each.

Fermoy opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play but two Dillon Cahill frees put us ahead again the second free was as a result of great work by Keith Dennehy in turning over possession.Fermoy then hit a purple patch scoring 3 points in a row to put 2 points between us for the first time in the game 9 to 7.

Dillon with a free which was cancelled out by a Fermoy score from play to keep the 2 point gap heading into the last 10 minutes.

Substitute Brian Walsh pointed with his first touch to make it a one point game and showing great battling qualities we scored two further Dillon frees to go ahead by one with time almost up. Despite the best efforts of the excellent back line Fermoy finally pointed after a sustained period of pressure to send the game to a replay.

Even though the quality wasn’t great at times our dream is still alive and we are now 13 championship games unbeaten at adult level for 2016.

Junior B Hurling Final

The bubble was bound to burst at some stage and at the 14th attempt we finally lost a championship game at adult level.Unfortunately it was to be in a final when we were beaten by a very strong Sars team in the Junior B final on Sunday night.

Sars played with the aid of a very strong wind in the first half and raced into a 7 pt to nil lead before a Cian Motherway free opened our account.

Cian would add 2 more frees to our toatal before half time as we trailed by 10 points to 3 at the half time whistle.

We needed a strong start to the second half and we certainly got it with Declan Dinneen pointing from the throw in,which was cancelled by a Sars free.A Graham Fleming goal and 2 more Cian frees had the deficit down to 2 points after 10 minutes of the half.

We were very unlucky not to score another goal when a shot from distance deceived the goalie hitting him and deflecting wide off the post.

Sars responded to this let off by hitting a purple patch scoring 1.06 without reply to wrestle back the momentum.and despite a further goal by Chris Smith and two pointed frees we were powerless to stop a powerful Sars team from adding on a few more scores to run out deserving winners 1.20 to 2.08.

A great effort by this team in reaching the final with a limited panel of players well done to Tomas O’Brien and Neil Reilly and all the players for a marvellous effort and best of luck to Sars in the county campaign.
