Junior Football;

On Saturday last we made the long journey to Dunmanway a winning one when we defeated the Beara champions Garnish by 8 points in the quarter final of this year’s Junior A football county. We made our customary slow start with Garnish racing into a 3 point lead after 10 mins.A Diarmuid O’Sullivan free opened our account and a point each from Ciaran Mullins and Paudie O’Sullivan had us level by the 20th minute.

A garnish free pushed them ahead once again and but for a splendid Ashley Walsh block we could have conceded a goal, Garnish responded with a point from play to stretch their lead to two heading for half time.

A general improvement in our play and an upping of our intensity led to us finishing the half very strongly scoring 1.02 without reply, an excellent Colm O’Sullivan goal from a lovely catch and finish, followed by a point each from our two half backs Ashley Walsh and Morry Lynch. The half time team talk was altered slightly following this late scoring burst.

The start of the second half was keenly contested with scores hard to come by but our greater fitness levels began to come to the fore culminating in one of the best goals to be seen at any level of football where Paudie received the ball on our half back line before going on a slaloming run before exchanging passes with Diarmuid and finishing excellently to the net to give us a 6 point cushion.

Garnish responded well with the next 2 points to close the gap but when Diarmuid scored a free following a late tackle on Paudie the siege was lifted and we finished the game with excellent scores from the hardworking Ciaran Mullins, midfielder Paul O’Sullivan and Captain Colm O’Sullivan who added 3 points from play to his earlier goal to leave us ahead 2.11 to 9 points at the full time whistle.

A very satisfactory result with some excellent scores taken, we now turn our attention to the PIHC semi-final v Fermoy and the JBHC final v Sars next weekend.

In the football semi-final we are due to play the winners of Brian Dillons and Shamrocks.
