Junior Football

Amid joyous scenes on Friday night last we won the Michael O’Connor sponsored East Cork Junior A title for the sixth time in our history when beating Castlelyons by 2 points.

We started the game well with Diarmuid O’Sullivan opening the scoring with a pointed 45 to which Paudie O’Sullivan added a lovely point from play to put us 2 ahead. Castlelyons hit a purple patch and scored the next 4 points unanswered to take the lead. We responded well however due to the dominance of Killian Cronin and Paul O’Sullivan in the middle of the field as we drew level again with points from Captain Colm O’Sullivan and Ciaran Mullins.

A lovely move involving Dillon Cahill and Paudie saw Colm crash a great ball to the roof of the Castlelyons net to stretch our lead. Ciaran Mullins with a free and another Paudie effort had us ahead by 5 coming up to the break 1.06 to 4 points but a lapse in concentration left Castlelyons in for a goal and when the added a point we went in at half time a point to the good 1.06 to 1.05.

The second half proved to be a very tense affair with very little scoring done, the crucial score of the game came midway through the half when an isolated Colm O’Sullivan brilliantly rounded his man to score a peach of a goal. We managed another point from Paudie shortly afterwards to put us in control and with our backs defending manfully we restricted Castlelyons to only 3 points for the half to remain ahead 2.07 to 8 points at the final whistle.

Dick Fitzgerald of the East Cork Board presented the Jim Ryan Cup to captain, birthday boy and Man of the Match Colm O’Sullivan.

I mentioned earlier that this was our sixth win in the history of the club and incredibly,Killian Cronin,Eoin and Diarmuid O’Sullivan were winning their fifth medal, a remarkable achievement.
