Cork Senior Hurling Championship - Round 4

Imokilly vs Erins Own

In a very even sided game in Pair Ui Rinn on Sunday 28th Imokilly bowed out of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship to a cruel last minute goal in injury time that saw them lose by a single point to Erins Own who now go on to the quarter final stages of the championship.

In a game that never saw much between the sides and could have gone either way and with a dramatic finish that saw Imokilly given one last chance to make a draw of it from a free in the very last puck of the game which Imokilly goalkeeper Declan Dalton, who had alaready made 3 fantastic saves to keep Imokilly in it struck it inches wide from inside his own half of the pitch. A dramatic and heartbreaking end to this game.

East Cork Final

The East Cork Oil sponsored Jamesy Kelleher Cup, Our Junior A hurling championship final took place on Saturday 27th August in Youghals GAA club grounds on Magners Hill, The pitch was in great shape and Youghal Piper Christy McCarthy lead the band out onto the field before Art Supple sang the national Anthem. Referee Ger Scully from Killeagh threw in the ball at 3pm and St Catherines started well, putting 2 points over the bar before Sarsfields settled down for the next few minutes. Sarsfields drew level with some great points and then St Catherines scored a goal putting them firmly in the driving seat. Sarsfields then scored the next 4 points from play and by the 10 minute mark were 1 point ahead on a score of St Catherines 1-2 to Sarsfields 6 points. This trend continued for the next 10 minutes with Sarsfields scoring a further 8 points to St Catherines 3 points leaving the score at half time Sarsfields 0-15 to St Catherines 1-5.

During the half time break it was great to see the 1966 Carrigtwohill team being honored and John Joe Regan spoke about all they achieved during that year winning the East cork and County.

The second half continued as the first half ended with Sarsfields adding a2 points before they won a penalty putting them ahead 1-16 to St Catherines 1-6, Sarsfields managed to hold their 10 point lead and with 10 minutes left on the clock disaster struck for St Catherines who had P O Connor sent to the line. Sars continued to dominate and with about 2 minutes to go St Catherines had a second player B Mulcahy red carded. At this stage the game was well and truly over and the scoreline at the final whistle was Sarsfields 1-25 to St Catherines 1-12

Sarsfields will go on to represent Imokilly in the County section which is down to be played on Sat 10th Sept vs Carrigdoun with the venue & time to be confirmed. A big thank you must go to Youghal GAA Club who had everything in great shape and ran a smooth final. To all the teams who took part in our Junior A Hurling Championship we say thank you and to our supporters who have traveled out to follow and support their teams this year we say thank you for that.

East Cork Junior A Football - Jim Ryan Cup launch

On Sunday 28th in Pairc Ui Rinn the Imokilly board held the press launch of the East Cork Junior A Football - Jim Ryan Cup between Castlelyons and Cloyne to be played on Friday 2nd Sept in Killeagh at 20.15.

Its great to see this game going ahead this coming week and that clubs are not waiting till December to play the JA final like last year in Pilmore. Both clubs have done well to get to this point and it should be a great game on Friday evening in Killeagh. The good news for GAA suporters is that Friday night will be a double header with the East Cork U21A Hurling Final of the Ben Purcell Cup 1969 between Aghada and Erins Own taking place on Fri 2nd Sept 18.45 in Killeagh.
