Junior B Hurlers bow out of Championship.

Castlelyons 4-12 Ballinacurra 6-15

Our Junior B Hurlers took on Ballinacurra in the East Cork Junior B Championship in the magnificent Killeagh Grounds last Friday evening. In the last few years we had many good games with Ballinacurra in this grade and this one lived up to expectations as it was a high scoring game.

Timmy McCarthy, who played well all through, exchanged points with Ballinacurra from a free. Our next score came 10 minutes into the game as Mark Murphy had a rousing clearance up the field and Ml Hegarty got possession and there was a 21 yard free which Timmy buried for a great goal and we were going well. Dunny had 0-1 from midfield, Declan Sexton 0-1 and Ml Hegarty added 0-1 as Timmy Mac’s total for the first half was 1-4. However we did let in Ballinacurra for 2-7 in the first half and we trailed by a goal but were well in the game.

Barry Fitzgerald came out to the corner forward position and Brian O Donovan went into goals for the second half with a view to strengthening both sectors. Barry done well as he scored 1-1 and Timmy added another 1-3 while Alan O Regan and Chris Cotter had 0-1 each. However, Ballinacurra applied fierce pressure on our backs and midfield during this half and managed to put 4-8 past us as they have a few very good forwards including Imokilly panellist Jake Hegarty. We lost on the final score of Castlelyons 4-12 and Ballinacurra 6-15. We are now out of this year’s Junior B Championship having been beaten twice, initially by Carrignabhfear and now by Ballinacurra. The lads gave it everything but we had some injuries and some were on holidays also. There was great example given to the team in general by Timmy McCarthy, Barry O Connell and Barry Fitzgerald all men who have been through many swings and roundabouts but always available come championship time. Hopefully they will give it another year to bring on a few more young players. Thanks also to James Maye, Colm Spillane, and Aidan O Sullivan who managed the team.

Team: - Barry Fitzgerald, Mark Murphy, Barry O Connell, Liam Moroney, Shane Fenton, Declan Sexton, Noel McAuliffe, Finian Waters, Brian (Dunny) O Donovan, Michael Geary, Michael Hegarty, Alan O Regan, Chris Cotter, Timmy McCarthy and Brian O Donovan. Subs: - Alan Henley, David Beausang, Alan O Neill, Will Daly and Mark Henley.

U21 A Hurler’s defeated by Erins Own.

Castlelyons 4-16 Erins Own 7-20

Our U21 A Hurlers, who had such an impressive win over Youghal in the first round, bowed out of the Championship rather tamely as they suffered a thirteen points defeat at the hands of Erins Own in Carrignabhfear on Tuesday 2nd August. We did have some injuries but we still had a lot of good players on the pitch. Anthony Spillane gave one of the best displays seen in a Castlelyons jersey for many a day scoring 3-15 as Shane Moroney added a goal and Barry a point over the hour. However, it was not good enough as Erins Own went on to record a very big score and were on top in many sectors. They will surely be favourites in the East Cork Final versus Aghada shortly. Thank to our Manager Mark Murphy, Coach, Mark O Flynn for their work this year and the lads as they had one win and one loss.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Shane Fenton, Declan Varner, Red Walsh, Keith O Leary, Niall O Leary, Jack Buckley, Brian O Donovan, Ronan Bransfield, Ml Geary, Shane Moroney (1-0), Jack Barry, Barry Murphy(0-1), Anthony Spillane (3-15) and David Beausang. East Cork Junior A Football Semi Final.

We contest the Semi Final of the East Cork Junior A Football Semi Final on this Saturday 13th August at 4 pm in Lisgoold. We play Ballinacurra as it’s Carrignabhfear and Cloyne in the other semi-final. We have played some great football earlier this year against Glenville and Glenbower Rovers en route to the semi-final. Now that we are out of the hurling the football is our only chance of bringing home a trophy this year and hopefully we will be all out for victory. We have the players and best of luck to all concerned.
