Under 21s get off to a winning start but at a price

County U21 A Hurling Championship Killeagh-Ita’s 2-19, Bishopstown 0-10

Killeagh-Ita’s had a comprehensive win over Bishopstown on Wednesday evening in Midleton in Round 1 of the inaugural County U21 A Hurling Championship. The win was cemented with a strong second-half display after there was little between the sides in the first half. Unfortunately the win was overshadowed by a bad arm injury sustained accidentally by Aaron Walsh in the first half which necessitated surgery on Friday for Aaron and will mean a few months on the sideline for Aaron. This is a big blow to the prospects of this team, the Junior A team and the minor teams (hurling and football) in their quest for success, as Aaron was a pivotal member of all these sides and had been having a fantastic season so far. It’s an even bigger blow to Aaron himself as he will have to kick his heels now while the action goes on without him. Best wishes Aaron!

Team: Colin Walsh, Jamie Landers, Jack O’Rourke, Kenneth Cantillon, Christy Coughlan, Kevin Murphy, Darragh Cahill, Gary Leahy, Darragh O’Brien, Aaron Walsh, Killian Treacy, Shane Smiddy, Dan Landers, Andrew Leahy, Matthew Murphy, David Ogbebor, Eric Murphy, Bobby McCarthy.

Summer Camp – the best ever!

The kit was the best yet, the sun shone endlessly, and over 200 children came to our annual Cúl Camp in Páirc Uí Chinnéide this week. The weather couldn’t have been better with temperatures in the high 20s on Monday and Tuesday getting us off to a scorching start. The coaches were all enthusiastic and full of fun, and our co-ordinators Ursula and Sean had everything planned to a T. We had loads of hurling and football, a little bit of rounders, and plenty of games and challenges as well as mini-blitzes. When 2.00 p.m. Friday came around, all 200+ children trooped wearily but happily off the pitches, followed by their coaches and helpers, and they all had some healthy fruit to sustain them on their journeys. Well done to all the boys and girls from age 5 to 13 who gave their best energies to it, and to our coaches and helpers (too many to mention individually) who ensured that everyone (including our two Dutch visitors Nina and Rose) had fun. A special thank you to the many people who brought sandwiches, cakes, and other essential supplies to the hungry coaches and helpers every day, and in particular to Ursula, Liz and Olivia (and others) who looked after the needs of young and old from early morning to almost 3.00 p.m. every day. We’re looking forward to 2017 already!

Some congratulations after a busy weekend:

To our sister club Killeagh Camogie’s senior team who won their championship game v St. Finbarr’s on Sunday evening;

To Angela and Kevin Walsh, who married in style in Killeagh church and partied in the Radisson, Little Island. Best wishes to you both and your daughter Keeva for a long and healthy life together;

To Carmel Barry, loyal GAA and Scór supporter, who has hung up her hairdressing scissors, brushes and shampoos after a remarkable 47 years of washing and cutting in Killeagh. If ever you have cause to write a memoir of all those stories revealed at the hairdresser’s, it would surely be a bestseller (although you might have to leave Killeagh!!) Well done Carmel, and may you have many happy and healthy years of happiness ahead of you.
