Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

At a rain sodden Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last we booked our passage into the quarter finals of this year’s championship by virtue of a hard fought victory over a fancied Fermoy side.

This victory was based on hard work, determination and a great will to win when faced with a wave of Fermoy pressure in the middle of the second half.

The game started in a cautious manner with the first 8 points shared, our efforts an opening Dillon Cahill 65 plus 2 excellent Ashley Walsh points from play followed by an impressive score from Dillon from the sideline going over with the help of an upright.

Up to this point Paudie O’Sullivan wasn’t able to get on the ball but eventually thundered into the game with 2 excellent points from play being set up by excellent deliveries from the back line.Fermoy responded with a pointed free but we finished the half the stronger with 2 Dillon frees and fittingly Ashley brought the half’s scoring to a close with his third from play to leave us ahead 9 points to 5 at the break.

Fermoy opened the scoring with a point from play to which we responded with 3 points of our own a Dillon 65 having missed an easier free and two beauties from Paudie who’s influence on the game was increasing.

Fermoy to their credit took over for the next 15 minutes or so outscoring us by 1.06 to a single Dillon free to turn a 6 point deficit into a 2 point lead 1.12 to 13 points.

Paudie moving to the half forward line at his juncture was vital in our recovery as he began to win a lot of ball and when he set up Ian Cahill for a peach of a goal the bleeding was stopped and the recovery was underway.

Fermoy levelled with a point from play to which Stevie Beausang responded to with a point of his own from play,a free apiece had us a point ahead heading into the last 5 minutes.

The hardworking sub Keith Dennehy broke from defence with a ball which he looked like striking for a point but hit Diarmuid O’Sullivan with an excellent ball to hand enabling Diarmuid to turn his man before setting up Ian for his and our second goal to put 4 points between the sides.

Fermoy pressure of a 21 yard free and two 65’s yielded only a point and Paudie made the issue safe with his fifth point from play from five efforts to bring the curtain down on a very satisfying victory.

The only downside to the win was the 2 serious thumb injuries picked up by Eoin O’Sullivan and Ashley Walsh.

We are now in the quarter final which is pencilled in for the end of August.
