Lisgoold News

07 October, 2009

The season is beginning to wind down as we saw the cut-off dates for the leagues. Now, that the dust has settled what we have left is this - two junior league finals (both hurling and football) our minors have to play Cobh in the league and championship final in football, and must play-off with Kilta Óg for a place in the hurling league final. Our under 21's have their championships yet to play, so it’s a very good return for what was a very hectic year. The ladies senior football final was played at the weekend, in which Lisgoold born Ella Ryan played at wing-back, however Donoughmore were more than up for this match. Two early goals set the tone, as they cruised to another County title. Hard luck Ella, and hard luck to Inch Rovers - they will be back. However, one must point out that at least 4 players on the inch team were involved in St.Catherines thrilling 1-9 all draw in the senior Camogie semi-final (against St.Finbarrs) only two hours previously. This was a ridiculous situation and most unfair on inch, as to be fair the Ballynoe ladies on the team, they did look a bit jaded. One does think the cup would have been heading east if it was played at a different date. Also, best of luck to St.Catherines who will play the replay on Monday week.

U15 HC Q-Final Oct 4th

Lisgoold 1-13 (16)

Bride Rovers 3-13 (22)

Our Under 15’s bowed out of the championship in what was an exceptionally good game between two committed sides. Despite the efforts of Cathal Cashman, Cian Scannell and Bill Whelan our lads just fell short by 2 goals. However, it wasn’t the result that had people talking, it was more of the effort of the energetic John Cashman who must have been devastated to score a remarkable 0-13 throughout the hour and still come up on the wrong side. John’s performance to be fair was at a high class and it is a shame, our lads couldn’t pull through. However they are a superb outfit and one does have they feeling that these lads will have their day down the road, as after their performance and especially the fantastic Mr.Cashman – the future is very bright for them.

JHL Division 2 Oct 2nd

Lisgoold 1-17 (20)

Sarsfields 2-10 (16)

This game was a thriller with some great performances from Dave Barry, Peter Leahy, Moss O’Connell, Liam Foley and Denis O’Brien. From start to finish, this was a very entertaining encounter with both sides fighting tooth and nail throughout the hour. Some say Lisgoold were a bit fortunate to win, but I suppose our luck has to change at some stage. Now, the deadline has passed, it means we have qualified for Division 1 and the league final. Whilst looking at the table it is a play-off between Sarsfields and Youghal. More info will be provided in the coming weeks about this league final as well the football final against Killeagh. As for our Junior Squad, well done lads. Promotion to Division 1 in both codes and two semi-final appearances. A fantastic return for 12 months of very hard work.

Knight of the Whistle

As we wind down the season the matches that are left get bigger, and Sunday coming we will see another one. Jerry O'Connell is beginning to become a well-known referee throughout cork county and has established [as his team of officials] a reputation of high quality officiating and this Sunday he takes another county final under his belt, as he will be in charge of the Premier Intermediate County Hurling Final between Douglas and Ballymartle - the Curtain raiser before the Senior County Hurling Final. No doubt it will be a thriller, and all in C.L.G Liosgcúl would like to wish Jerry and his team of dedicated officials’ best wishes in this titanic encounter.

All in C.L.G. Liosgcúl were saddened to hear of the passing of Sonny Ryan, uncle of our hurling manager Gerry Ryan. Our deepest sympathy and our condolences go out to the Ryan family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hAnam dhílis.
