East Cork Junior A Hurling League

Lisgoold 1-18 vs 2-10 St. Itas

Lisgoold 0-15 vs 4-21 Sarsfields

This past week saw two home games in the East Cork hurling league as Lisgoold prepare to play Killeagh in the first round of the hurling championship on Jun 24. In the first encounter, St. Itas made the journey from Gortroe for a mid-week clash in Lisgoold. The home side won out on this particular occasion with John Cashman hitting some fine points up front and Eoin O’Sullivan, Brian Clifford and Brian O’Sullivan forceful in defence.

Team vs St. Itas: 1. Ciaran Cronin, 2. Andrew Donovan, 3. Eoin O’Sullivan, 4. Cian Scannell, 5. Bryan O’Sullivan, 6. Brian Clifford, 7. Noel Connery, 8. Kieran Barry, 9. Pa O’Mahony, 10. John Cashman, 11. John McCarthy, 12. Brendan Flynn, 13. Barry Ahern, 14. Maurice O’Connell, 15. Bill Whelan. Subs used: Charles Smart (HT).

It was a different story on Sunday night, when a strong second half showing by a sharp-shooting Sarsfields side sealed a league win when the two sides met in Lisgoold. It was a game of contrasting fortunes for Lisgoold. The lads were well in it when the half-time whistle was blown with Sars up 0-12 to 0-11. The spread of scores was encouraging with points from Rob, Moss, John Mc and Dinny together with a long range free from Ciaran adding to the 6 points John Cashman had registered. However, the Lisgoold scores dried up in the second half as Sars took charge and rattled 3 goals in succession to establish a 3-19 to 0-14 lead which Lisgoold did not recover from. Management will take encouragement from the first half performance and will expect a full strength panel to be ready for championship in a fortnight.

Team vs Sars: 1. Ciaran Cronin (0-1 free), 2. Andrew Donovan, 3. Eoin O’Sullivan, 4. Jerry O’Connell, 5. Pa O’Mahony, 6. Charles Smart, 7. Noel Connery, 8. Peter Leahy, 9. Rob Smart (0-1), 10. John Cashman (0-10, 0-5 frees), 11. John McCarthy (0-1), 12. Brendan Flynn, 13. Bill Whelan, 14. Maurice O’Connell (0-1), 15. Denis O’Brien (0-1). Subs used: Barry Ahern, Kyle Devine.

Juvenile Round Up

U14 B County Semi-Final: Lisgoold 3-10 vs 4-4 Fastnet Gaels.

Excitement is gathering with the Féile na nGael weekend almost upon us now. We wish the U14 lads the best of luck as they represent Cork next weekend. In the meantime, they concentrated on the County championship last week. They were pushed all the way by a brave Fastnet Gaels side in the County semi-final in Clonakilty last Wed. This was the boy’s 4th championship game in 12 days and with the potential distraction of the Feile finals, credit must go to their determination in digging out this result.

Congratulations to Ballincurrig N.S. who won the Roinn H8 Sciath na Scol Hurling Final last Fri in CIT grounds on a scoreline of Ballincurrig N.S. 1-06 vs 0-01 St. Lachteen’s N.S. (Donoughmore).

Lisgoold GAA golf classic

The annual Lisgoold GAA golf fundraiser took place on Jun 9. It was a fantastic day out, in beautiful weather in the splendid grounds of the East Cork Golf Club. The event organised by the Development Fund Committee proved to be a very enjoyable occasion. After the golf was over, the teams tucked into a fine meal and then back to Woods bar for the presentations of prizes. The development committee would like to thank East Cork Golf Club for hosting the event, our sponsors for their generous prizes, especially the main sponsors of the event Keary’s Garage, Woods’ Bar for hosting the presentations afterwards, and importantly the teams who took part in the event. The winners were as follows:

1st Denis, Brian & Conor O'Leary; 2nd Paul Lynch, Tony Calnan & Sean Kelly. 3rd Pat Mulcahy, Fergus Mullane & Patrick Cremin. Longest Drive: Declan O'Neill. Nearest to the pin: Niall Barrett. Spot Prizes: Owen Hegarty, Trish Hennessey & Claire Coughlan.

Well done Willie!

Well done to clubman Willie McCann who achieved his goal of completing a 100k UltraMarathon as part of the Portumna Forest Marathon last Saturday. This is a fantastic achievement and a result of 6 months of hard training; not too many training schedules feature a 30 mile run and a 20 mile run on consecutive days. Next time you see Willie out pounding the rounds, give him a cheer.
