Launch Junior A Hurling Championship

12 June, 2016

The Launch of the East Cork Oil Sponsored 2016 Imokilly Junior A Hurling Championship The Jamesey Kelleher Cup

The launch of the 2016 Jamesey Kelleher Cup took place on Fri 8th June in Clonmult. As is tradition the winners from the previous year host the launch the following year and as Dungourney were successful in claiming that title last year it was agreed to hold the night in Clonmult in the old schoolhouse which has been converted into a fantastic village community centre.

Imokilly PRO Shane Supple welcomed all those in attendance on the night, Con Ryan from our sponsors for this competition East Cork Oil and all the clubs present including representatives from the other divisions around the county. In his opening address Shane stated that it was great to see such large numbers in attendance and that it shows how important the Jamesey Kelleher cup is to the clubs in the Imokilly Division in East Cork.

Its with great pride we can talk of the Imokilly division in Junior Hurling as over recent years clubs who have won in Imokilly out have gone on to represent the division so well in the county section, clubs like Castlemartyr who reached the Munster finals in 2014,  Fr O Neills who won the Munster final in 2005. A fact that can’t be disputed is that Cork has had a team in the Munster Finals 14 times in the last 15 years and Imokilly have had 3 of those.

It’s also fitting that we should launch this championship in the home of Jamesey Kelleher, a Dungourney hurler who was included in the Cork Hurling Team of the Century.  Dungourney have a proud tradition of hurling winning the All Ireland Hurling Championship in1902 and doing very well as a club ever since then winning the Jamesey Kelleher Cup in 2015 and becoming Cork Junior Hurling Champions beating Cloughduv the same year and then they were crowned Munster Champions beating Fenor from Waterford in the Munster Final. They sadly lost out to Glenmore of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final on a score of 3-10 to 1-11. But they did Imokilly proud and the County by getting that far in 2015.

Shane then asked the Imokilly Chairman Mr. Richard Fitzgerald to say a few words. Our chairman first of all thanked everyone for coming and congratulated Dungourney on providing a wonderful venue for this launch, he then spoke about the competition advising on its start date, He thanked our sponsors East Cork Oil for their long standing involvement in the Jamesey Kelleher Cup. He stated that this year would be a great year with any of the teams facing each other capable of winning it out. He thanked the delegates from the other Divisions who were there on the night adding that it was great to see the division supporting each other.  He spoke about last years winners and congratulated them on their success after they won the final in Cloyne last year and he wished them every success going forward.

The PRO then gave a run down of the games, the dates, times and venues for each. He then called on the Chairman of Dungourney Mr. Christy Fitzpatrick to address the crowd. Christy welcomed everyone to Clonmult stating that it was an Honour to be hosting this launch, he thanked everyone for their attendance and wished all clubs every success going forward in the competition adding that its great to win such a prestigious competition. He stated that we in Imokilly are blessed with the standard of this competition and we are delighted to have represented the division and county so well last year and he knew that whoever would win it out this year would be worthy ambassadors to the division.

The PRO Shane Supple thanked Christy and all the members of Dungourney club for making everyone feel so welcome and he then called on Mr. Con Ryan of East Cork Oil to say a few words. Con thanked Imokilly and Dungourney for inviting him to the launch stating that the Jamesey Kelleher Cup was important and that East Cork Oil was delighted to be associated with the Jamesey Kelleher Cup and their association with Imokilly. He wished every one a great year going forward and looked forward to another wonderful championship.

Finally Shane thanked every one for their attendance, Dungourney for hosting the launch and everyone in the club who helped with refreshments on the night. He once again thanked our sponsors East Cork Oil, The Midleton Park Hotel and O’Connor Motor factors who all play an important role in the division. Our sponsors allow us provide a high quality championship in both Hurling and Football and without the support of these great sponsors we would not be where we are today. He then called on Don Hegarty to close proceedings with Amhrán na bhFiann
