Castlelyons GAA Club Notes

Wild start but tame finish as Junior B Hurlers defeated by Sarsfields.

Castlelyons 5-5 Sarsfields 3-15

We travelled to Sarsfields for an away Junior 2 League game on Friday evening last.  The weather and pitch was glorious and ideal for hurling.  We started the game in a whirlwind manner as Ml John Dorgan had a goal, Alan Fenton had a goal and a point and Ian Ronayne finished off an opportunist shot to the net to put us 3-1 to 0-2.  However, Sarsfields gradually came back into the game and kept tagging on a few scores. A wild pull by one of our backs led to a penalty but Shane O Sullivan made a great save.   We were leading 3-2 to 0-6 at the short whistle.

The first six minutes of the second half was very even.  A Sarsfields ran right through and billowed the net and the same player added a point but Alan Fenton replied for us with a mighty goal.  David Beausang won possession and sent in good ball which Ml John Dorgan doubled on for his second goal.  Sarsfields took over completely and piled on the scores to run out winners 3-15 to 5-5.

Referee John Kirby did a good job and it was great to see Castlelyons with a full outfit including many subs and we have a few more to come on so we could still do well in the Championship although the League is now out of reach for 2016.

Team: - S O Sullivan, M Murphy, B O Connell, P O Neill, F Waters, D Varner, L Moroney, S Fenton, Ml Geary, A Fenton, Ml Hegarty, R O Regan, I Ronayne, Ml J Dorgan, D Beausang. Imokilly 3-20 UCC 1-11

Riverstown was again the setting for the first round SHC game between Imokilly and UCC.  It was an evening ideal for hurling.  There was a fine attendance.   Sure enough there was some good passages of play with good scores, good saves, and in general good fast hurling.  We had a big interest in the game as Tom Carroll lined out at corner back for Imokilly with our star forward Aidan O Sullivan was listed among the substitutes.   Our goalie Jack Barry and Colm O Neill was listed among the UCC Substitutes. Surprisingly Jack turned out at corner forward for the Students from the start. Then to make the story better Jack made his way in to pick up his clubmate Tom Carroll in direct battle leaving the high powered Tom with some serious decision making.

The balcony on the clubhouse was rocking with a large crowd of Castlelyons people and as Jack gained great possession and shot they broke into premature celebration but it skimmed wide.  Jack did gain possession on a massive high catch and shot for goal but again Tom got in a touch at ground level and the goalie saved denying Jack a score. Later when Jack left the field “Tomeen” really came into the game with his trademark bursting out and clearances.  Towards the end of the game Aidan O Sullivan and Colm O Neill came on for each side.

Well done to our lads who represented both the Barony of Imokilly and the College and all acquitted themselves well.  This gives an opportunity to players from Junior and Intermediate to experience senior hurling.  Great to see Seamus Harnedy come back to form and bang in 2-6 and Paudie O Sullivan enjoy a new lease of life with both Cloyne and Imokilly as he scored 1-3, indeed, the rest has done him good and he could well be able for County battle again.  Of course, there are many arguments about the state of Cork hurling and one of the latest “little songs” or is it “cribs” is do away with the Divisions as it does no good for hurling!  Can anyone tell us what is that about and it is not all from the hierarchy you know.

In any event it’s Douglas next time out for Imokilly.  Hopefully, intercounty men Brian Lawton, Colm Barry and present Cork Minor Captain Niall O Leary will be available to the panel for this game and there are a few others showing up well at junior and intermediate club level that will be given an opportunity in some challenge games.  Well done to all.
