East Cork Junior A Football Championship

Quarter Final – Sat 28th May, Glenville

Lisgoold 0-06 vs 0-08 Carraig na bhFear

Lisgoold exited the East Cork championship after a narrow defeat to Carraig na bhFear in the quarter final on Saturday night. While conditions were perfect for football, both teams struggled for scores over the course of the game. Carraig na bhFear had the better start with an early point after 2 minutes. However, John Cashman, was on target from a free soon after to level the sides up. During the first quarter, Carraig began to get a grip around midfield and despite dominating possession for a period, some solid defending by Lisgoold kept the score down. However, Lisgoold struggled to make an impact in attack, apart from points from Cian Scannell and Bryan O’Sullivan, and half-time came with Lisgoold a point down 0-04 to 0-03. Soon after the restart Lisgoold levelled from a Cashman free. Carraig responded again but both sides continued to struggle in front of the posts. On 45 minutes Carraig were seemingly dealt a blow when they were reduced to 14, but this seemed to spur them on. They went on to take the lead on 47 minutes and moments later added another point. Lisgoold refused to yield and an Eoin O’Sullivan point from play closed the margin to a point entering the final stages. On 55 minutes, Carraig scored again to lead 0-08 to 0-05. Lisgoold pressed hard in the final minutes but struggled to threaten for a much needed goal. A slim chance was presented deep into injury time when Lisgoold won a free 25 yards out. John Cashman blasted the ball against a crowded Carraig goal line, who ensured that the last kick of the game headed over, rather than under the crossbar, to seal for them a place in the semi-final.
