Intermediate Hurling Championship Preliminary Round Dungourney 2-23 Barryroe 0-10

Our First foray into Intermediate Hurling Championship and victory secured and we set up a meeting with Douglas in round 1. Conditions in Pairc Ui Rinn were perfect pitch like a carpet and only a slight breeze.

 

Ryan Denny opened the scoring with a pointed free inside the opening minute after Kevin Rohan was hauled down. Barryroe responded with two points from play, Shane Hegarty levelled the scores after ten minutes with his first of six points from play. Jack Griffin was the supplier for the first goal floating in a great ball for Shane Casey who rose highest turned and buried to the back of the net. John Ronayne popped up from wing back to raise a white flag from distance, Barryroe responded with a point from a free. Brian Ahearne making his first championship start goaled after thirteen minutes picking up a breaking ball scything through the defense and finishing with aplomb. Ryan added another free and Jack pointed from play pushing the lead to eight points. Barryroe fought back scoring four of the next five points, Shane Hegarty getting a brilliant point from play in between. Ryan pointed a 65 just before half time leaving the score Dungourney 2-7 Barryroe 0-7 at the short whistle.

 

Jack Griffin got the scoring underway in the second half pointing from long range with Ryan adding two more one play and one free. Barryroe responded with two points in quick succession from play with Shane Hegarty and Bill Ahern responding back with white flags of their own. Barryroe pointed from play again on forty two minutes which would be their last score of the game, Kevin raised a white flag leaving us nine points up with ten minutes to go. It would have been easy to take the foot of the gas but the lads didn’t they drove on and a devastating final ten minutes yielded a further ten points. Ryan pointed two frees with Shane Hegarty scoring from play, Kenneth Kelleher raised a white flag after coming on. Bill Ahern now operating at wing back marauding forward fired over two long range beauties. Kenneth got another point after good interplay with James Leahy and Kevin Rohan. Jack Griffin had a goal harshly ruled out for square ball when his run looked to have been timed to perfection. Shane Hegarty added two more points and Ryan finished the scoring with a point from play.

 

Well Done to all involved a good start to life at Intermediate Grade we now play Douglas the June Bank Holiday weekend in the first Round. Some great performances on the night Warren McCarthy corner back was outstanding his brother James at wing back was immense twenty four hours after playing FAI cup soccer with Midleton against Shamrock Rovers. Shane Hegarty at Midfield was an energizer bunny at midfield covering every blade of grass in Pairc Ui Rinn. James Leahy linked the play well at Centre Forward assisting on numerous scores with some great hand passes. Kev Rohan Bill Ahern and Jack Griffin worked tirelessely giving defenders no time on the ball.
