Junior A Footballers crash out of the Championship

East Cork Junior A Football Championship Round 3 v Lisgoold

Venue Castelyons

Glenville 0-7

Lisgoold 2-8 AET

After a very tough and physical match against near rivals Lisgoold our Junior A Footballers came up on the wrong side of extra time as we crashed out of this year’s Championship at the 3rd round stage. Over all it was an excellent display by our lads who wore the black and amber with pride. Glenville came into this match after a second round win against Bride rovers but we always knew whenever we face Lisgoold in league or championship there was always a kick of the ball in it. Glenville started the match in impressive form with a Josh Cooke point in the fifth Minute but three unanswered points from Lisgoold put them in the driving seat. We were very fortunate with the amount of frees that we got and on each occasion Josh stepped up to the mark and put the ball over the bar and by the twenty minute mark it was all square but a Lisgoold point on the stoke of half time meant they held a narrow lead at the interval. Lisgoold opened the scoring in the second half with a well taken point and that was followed at the other end with a Pointed free from Josh. Glenville were doing very well in the full backline keeping their opponents at arm’s length forcing them to kick from impossible angles. We were soon on level terms with a superb point from Brendan Maloney on the fifteen minute mark. It was very nip and tuck right to the end and in the dying moments of normal time we looked like we had it won when captain David quirk lead by example winning the breaking ball to set up Brendan for a super score but however in the last minute of Injury time Lisgoold snatch a Point to leave it all even at 0-6 apiece. Talk about drama with extra time taking place both teams had to wait a full 40 minutes for extra time to start as we had to wait for Castelyons to turn on the light so technically by 9:30 extra time begun. We started extra time in superb fashion with a Josh Cooke point in the opening ten second Lisgoold were always dangerous going forward as they carved their way through our defence for the opening goal of the game that would be their only score for this period of extra time which meant at the half time whistle it was 1-7 to 0-7. Despite our best efforts in the second period we were not able to catch up with Lisgoold and despite a super save from Goalie Kieran Cronin Lisgoold had that extra bit of work done as they scored 1-1 in the final few moments to win by 7 points in the end. Well done to both teams on a great game of football and the best wishes to Lisgoold in the quarter final.

Minors, under 16 and under 13 Maintain unbeaten run in the league
